Reaction Gif Bomb Game
« on: March 19, 2018, 02:20:21 PM »
EDIT: A lot has changed since making this post. I added login functionality, and several games, so now you can create, store, and share your lesson games with other teachers! Go to https://www.dan-teacher.com/ and register to get started (totally free, and always will be)

I've been working pretty tirelessly on my latest project. It is a web-based bomb game. I updated it to use PHP which means that you can upload your created game to my server automatically and reference it later using a GameID. I need some help bug testing it and also creating textbook lessons for the game:

http://dan-teacher.com/reaction-bomb

If you create a lesson, let me know (with a title and which textbook/grade) so I can update the list:

Elementary Grade 6 - 천재 Book Lesson 1- "What grade are you in?" Game ID: IW6AGUMD
http://dan-teacher.com/reaction-bomb/IW6AGUMD
Elemeentary Grade 6 - 전재 Book Lesson 2 - "I Have a Headache." Game ID: 0HGF7WCM
http://dan-teacher.com/reaction-bomb/0HGF7WCM
Elementary Grade 5 - 천재 Book Lesson 1 - "I'm from Canada" Game ID: 24SI0U3B
http://dan-teacher.com/reaction-bomb/24SI0U3B
Elementary Grade 5 - 천재 Book Lesson 2 - "What Are Those?" Game ID: 4RC8MJQN
http://dan-teacher.com/reaction-bomb/4RC8MJQN

Be sure to full screen your browser (F11 key on Chrome) and zoom the browser so that the board fills the screen (Ctrl+Mouse Wheel on Chrome).

Current Issues:
Using quotation marks, apostrophes, or semicolons messes up the answers. Super annoying. I'm working on it. - Fixed
Students are complaining that it's not fair because there are 26 (A-Z) options, which doesn't evenly divide into the number of teams. - Fixed
It seems that if you click the start button multiple times, the game will load more teams. Should be an easy fix. - Fixed
Internet Explorer is garbage and can't handle some of the javascript (resizing pictures especially). I don't really know a good workaround for this, so avoid using IE if you can. - Somewhat fixed. It seems to be pretty playable with new versions of IE.

Two minor bug fixes. I've used this with several classes to great success. I'm wondering why Waygookers aren't using this. Any feedback as to why you clicked this and decided not to use it would be helpful for me. Obviously, I'm not making money off of this or anything, but the time investment in this project would be a lot more meaningful if this tool was usable by as many people as possible. The kids absolutely love this bomb game, and once you get the hang of using it, it's really easy to set up for any lesson.
Please let me know so I can fix the issues!

If you get a thousand downloads you'll be lucky to get 5 comments, that's just how waygook is.

Thanks for the reply. I can see from the database that a few people have created lessons using this, and perhaps others are using the lessons that I created, so it is getting some use, which is all I really want. I just hoped a few people might give some feedback on the user experience to help me improve the program.

I see there are actually a lot of people making games for this. I have recently updated my web-site and I'm making some adjustments. The base URL has also changed, though the old one is still functioning for now. If the site goes down, I apologize. There's some weird stuff going on with php that I'm trying to figure out. Anyway, let me know if you are actually using this and if it's gone down or given you any problems. Also, if you would like to share any of your created lessons with other teachers, let me know.

Thanks!

Hi DeeDubb,

Thank you for making and sharing these games - they're great!

As for issues, I have spotted one very minor problem. When you play the cup game, once the cups have finished moving, the -10 is ever so slightly visible either side of its cup, particularly the -. It's barely noticeable but my hawk-eyed students would probably spot it right away.

Anywho, thanks again for your efforts.

Hi :)

Thanks so much for this, I love how easy you've made it for us! I also really love the "scrambled sentence" option!

I just wanted to check two things:

1. What the possibility was of having the bomb game display numbers instead of letters? I teach in a boys middle school, and I can totally imagine my boys eliminating letters so that the word left on the board spelt some profanity! So I tend to edit the PPT bomb games so that they have to either choose letters or a combination of letters and numbers (like how chess players identify the squares).

2. Would it be possible to have multiple correct combinations for the unscrambling of sentences? I inadvertently created one where there were two correct answers (This is my favorite book, and This book is my favorite) - it would be nice if I could go back and edit it so that it included another correct combination :)

Thanks again! :)

Thank you very much for pointing this out. I think it should be an easy fix. I'll get on it.

1. I believe you emailed me about this. For anyone else concerned, I made a temporary fix. You can type:

https://www.dan-teacher.com/reaction-bomb-numbers/(gameID) instead to see a numbered version.

For example:
https://www.dan-teacher.com/reaction-bomb/4RC8MJQN ->
https://www.dan-teacher.com/reaction-bomb-numbers/4RC8MJQN

This is incredible and so convenient! Thank you so much for sharing this as I will be using it a lot!

Thank you! It was a lot of work, but if people are using it, it was definitely worth the effort. A good use of my desk warming time for sure.

Hey Dan,

I'm having a little bit of trouble with the "scramble sentence" feature with your bomb game. Sometimes when I use this feature and click the words in the correct order I get stuck and cannot advance in the game. The game won't give me an option to continue, skip or anything. It was kind of a buzz kill because I had to reload the page every time this question came up as you cannot edit (or so I think?) Any advice you could provide?

I think I know what the issue is. Is the bottom of the screen cut off? It's possible that you can't see the progress button because the screen isn't zoomed out enough. Can you try zooming out a little bit more to see the button?

I tried to do this but there was still no button. It's weird as sometimes it's there and sometimes it's not.

Hi Carter,

Someone else sent me the same issue, and upon further testing, I found that if you have an extra space after the end of the sentence, then there will be a blank word created which prevents the sentence from matching. I will try to prevent this error from happening, but in the mean time, you can edit your sentence scrambles without a blank space after the final word.
