Animals (4 lessons)
« on: April 23, 2018, 12:21:54 PM »
Hi - just finished teaching a unit about animals to my first graders. A lot of the ideas have been taken from other posters, but the worksheets / PPTs are new. Also, these lessons are for a lecture style approach that has very few speaking / communicative activies, as my rowdy middle school boys are too cool for that sort of thing. Any questions / feedback / mistakes then please let me know. Cheers  ;D

First Lesson: The Animal Kingdom (Mammals / Reptiles / Amphibians / Fish / Birds)

Start off with this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8aFcHFu8QM) to introduce the topic.

Ask Ss to say what animals they know - write them on the board in 5 groups (whether or not they are mammals etc). Help Ss to provide at least 2-3 examples of each animal group. (What animals can swim? What animals say 'ribbit'? etc)

Segway into the PPT - explain that all animals can be classified into two broad groups - vertebrates and invertebrates. Vertebrates (the focus of this lesson) can be classified further into 5 groups - mammals / reptiles etc.

Hand out the worksheet so the Ss can answer the Qs / fill in the tables as you work through the PPT.

Go through each animal group and explain the general traits of each (there are many exceptions!). Emphasise the difference between reptiles and amphibians as the Ss usually struggle with this. (Turtles are reptiles despite living in the sea! Salamanders and lizards are different etc.)

If there is time at the end, usually played this vid https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kAphgHhlteM

Second lesson: Habitats (Deserts / Rainforest / Wetlands etc)

Recap the last lesson (diets / mammals etc).

Play this intro vid (https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=176&v=8jP8CC2rKj4)

Explain that today's lesson is about where animals live. Give worksheet, encourage Ss to fill in the worksheet as they go along. Tell the Ss that there are many different kinds of habitat, but this lesson's focus is on 9 of them.

Rest of the lesson is nice and simple - with a word search to finish off with B)

This video is also quite nice for showing different habitats: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6v2L2UGZJAM

Third Lesson: Describing Animals

Recap first 2 lessons.

This lesson is loosely based off this youtube vid https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPvqLmt4oNk

Show first slide with the big cats - they're all carnivores, all mammals, all cats ... what's different? Their appearance! So today the topic is describing what animals look like.

Go through the features, check Ss are numbering them correctly.

Go through an example of how to write a short description of an animal using the vocab they've looked at thus far (lion). Give the Ss the template sentences and ask them to write a short description of each animal.

If time, Ss can draw and describe their own animal.

Final Lesson: Extinct / Endangered Animals

Recap previous lessons.

Started with first 2 or so mins of MJ's Earth song  8) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAi3VTSdTxU

Show the slides with extinct / endangered - ask Ss to guess what it means.

Show 'Top 10 Endangered Animals' vid (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6P0vEH1sWm8) and ask Ss to remember
what animals they see and how many are left.

Explain extinction is a natural process but humans are speeding it up. Why? What are the main causes?

Give Ss slip of paper with animal and endangered reason (some of the reasons given are a bit iffy...). Go through 20 animals on PPT, drill animal pronunciation.

Explain speaking activity - find a S, complete dialogue, write their answer down. 10-15 mins activity.

After, wrap up. Ask 5 or so Ss to read their animal to the class.

If time, finish up with the rest of MJ's Earth.
