Hi - just finished teaching a unit about animals to my first graders. A lot of the ideas have been taken from other posters, but the worksheets / PPTs are new. Also, these lessons are for a lecture style approach that has very few speaking / communicative activies, as my rowdy middle school boys are too cool for that sort of thing. Any questions / feedback / mistakes then please let me know. Cheers
First Lesson: The Animal Kingdom (Mammals / Reptiles / Amphibians / Fish / Birds)
Start off with this video (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8aFcHFu8QM) to introduce the topic.
Ask Ss to say what animals they know - write them on the board in 5 groups (whether or not they are mammals etc). Help Ss to provide at least 2-3 examples of each animal group. (What animals can swim? What animals say 'ribbit'? etc)
Segway into the PPT - explain that all animals can be classified into two broad groups - vertebrates and invertebrates. Vertebrates (the focus of this lesson) can be classified further into 5 groups - mammals / reptiles etc.
Hand out the worksheet so the Ss can answer the Qs / fill in the tables as you work through the PPT.
Go through each animal group and explain the general traits of each (there are many exceptions!). Emphasise the difference between reptiles and amphibians as the Ss usually struggle with this. (Turtles are reptiles despite living in the sea! Salamanders and lizards are different etc.)
If there is time at the end, usually played this vid
