I've been in Asia for quite a while and have traveled and taught in a few countries. What percentage of Asian men would you say you've seen/known who could grow a beard/moustache/goatee that have not done so?

My experience tells me that it's closer to zero. That is, virtually every Asian guy I have known that could grow facial hair has done so.

So we're just going to casually ignore all the traditional art and historical drama shows where Asians are rocking lumberjacks and Gandalf beards and mustachios?

There's huge cultural emphasis on being clean-shaven. Like think Mad men style. Much of Asia is still in that era of styling because that's when they experienced most of their economic growth. Hence why you don't see much Asian facial hair. It implies you either don't have a job, are poor or work on a farm.

None of these are super attractive.

In fact, the main reason you're seeing a revival of beards trending is the emerging scene of silicon valley, start-ups, youtuber, independent worker lifestyle in America. Whereas Asia is still very much family corporate centered. (Samsung, LG and all the same names in Korea that's been in power since the end of the Korean war)

Also Korea's air is pretty shitty. Frequently, face mask shitty with pollution and all that. When it starts to rain, where do you think all that air pollution is going to go?

Something to think about when you're planning a "Singing In The Rain" routine in Seoul.

Back on topic: Most Korean men can grow some form of facial hair, but they choose not to as they consider the look ‘dirty’ and inappropriate for the work place. Funny, given that Korea had a long history of not cutting a single hair from their bodies, as our bodies were given to us by our ancestors and it was seen as a form of filial disrespect to remove any part of it. It was the Colonizing Oppressors that introduced the ‘Western’ look of the groomed face and 양복 that is so prevalent today, but when your country’s most successful companies, families, and politicians are still all benefactors of said colonizers, I can see how this habit might also die hard. Also true that looking good with facial hair without looking unkempt can be hard for any male to pull of, but perhaps especially for East Asian males.

Also, this guy has already single-handedly given Korea more moustache than it can bear. The country might have moustache fatigue for generations to come.



Maybe I can rebrand myself as the Topic Enforcer...
