ESL in the ROK 3.0 (19 games for any lesson)
« on: October 14, 2018, 07:35:15 pm »
* The following is not meant to replace this or other sites *

Hey everyone,

I think it's time to update this post to help clear any confusion you may have.

Here's a site I made with pre-built 19 games for any lessons. They're similar to PPT games, but instead are all completely randomized, you can choose 7 fonts (no downloads needed), and the font sizes automatically adjust. In other words, they are dynamic and pretty sweet. Each game has a hot keys menu to help you master and maximize your experience.

You can find it here: https://www.eslintherok.com.

There's 19 games currently, but I will be adding more. Voting for upcoming games is on another site. You can find the link on this page: https://www.eslintherok.com/contact

I've started a Kakao group chat - ESL in the ROK - I'll probably reply quicker there if you want to get a hold of me.

LASTLY, I'm looking for volunteers to enter their book data! I've added my books. All you need is your teacher's guide and some free time. If you can help that would be much appreciated.

p.s. if you like it and plan on using it, I would buy a cheap mouse (5k at Daiso). Mine works throughout the classroom, so you can walk around and not be stationary.

WOW!!! This is an amazing project, thank you so much!

Edited: title

Thank you! I just updated it tonight with some minor fixes and a NEW game.

PUBG (Battleground) Four Corners.

I'm pretty excited to see the G5 faces when we play it.

You can print the papers the students carry here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1gaVcobvZ3zPp-EsGlfQr9_yQh97k7IQn

Let me know if you have any questions!

Enjoy.

Today, I wanted to get my students out of their seats and moving, so I tried out a different variation of Hot Potato with my grade 4 and 5 students and they both LOVED IT.

All you need is get a ball, a dice, a teacher's desk bell and load up Hot Potato.

- I got everyone to make an evenly spaced circle around the room (make them put their hands up by their side, so there's some space in between each other)
- play the hot potato song, and the students pass the 'potato' clockwise around the room.
- when you push the bell, they switch directions and go counter clockwise (click it as many times as you want to keep them on their toes)
- left click to stop the music
- the student with the ball, says what's on the screen.
- now give that student the dice to roll
- if it's 1, that student sits down.
- if it's 2, the next student sits down.
- if it's 3, count 2 over and that student sits down.
- and so on.
*count in the direction that the ball was moving when the music stopped*

I played until I had about 10 students left and rewarded them with a stamp, then did our book work. I can't wait to try this at my other school next week.

New books are out for grade 5 and 6...

So I need some people who have those books to input their vocab and expressions.

It's pretty easy and take about an hour and a half.

PM if you can help out.

I just added the new G5 Daekyo book data.

Thanks to another user for inputting the new YBM Kim books too.

Still need someone to input the Chunjae, YBM Choi and Dong-a books.

PM if you have one of those 3.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I updated the codebase this past month to help make the site quicker and smoother while adding a couple new things.

- fixed Matching game issue
- an improved method to retrieve and use future updates
- a 'buy me a coffee' link for donations
- a 'past lessons' options

The latter saves your lesson data to your browser when you set it now. As long as you don't clear your cache, your old lessons won't go anywhere. You can manage them by clicking the blue Past Lessons button on the homepage.

Before if you closed your browser/tab, you would lose that data and have to go through the process of setting it again. I think this feature will help out everyone that uses this site alongside their phonics books or with own custom lessons.

FYI - An old version of the site might be saved to your browser, so give it a second to load the new version and close down your browser to ensure you're on the updated version.

Easiest way to tell if you're on the new page? The homepage now has a blue 'Past Lessons' button and a yellow 'Buy my a coffee' button.

Pushed a lot of code updates today.

Most were updates to the games code, but other things you'll notice almost immediately.

Game Changes:
- updated the attachment links for certain games from Google Drive (banned in some provinces) to a PDF hosting site that shouldn't be
you can still use the Google Drive link too (it was linked in a previous post)
- games will now cycle through your vocabulary/expressions
a user said the same vocabulary kept appearing during a game, so outlier
cases where the game randomly chose the same word every time, won't happen again

- games now automatically adjust the font-size for you
you can't adjust it anymore, so I've updated the hot keys/scroll settings for games to reflect those changes
boxes with the same width will have the same font-sizes to keep things symmetrical
- Letter Bowling now has controls that make it much easier to play and follow along
- Elimination/What's Behind/Stars has all been updated from very old(bad) code to run better on our school computers
- What's Behind now grabs a random 'funny fail' GIF for each round
you shouldn't get the same GIFs constantly
- Matching now has a cool random background gradient feature that makes each round different, yet beautiful
- Sparkle has the ability to pause/start the timer by clicking on it
- Red and Blue was rotated, so the words can be larger and the colors are split evenly between a pair of Ss

Site Changes:
- added a yin-yang loading icon when visit the site or reload the page
- dropped support for Edge (sorry to that one user)
- added book image placeholders

If you receive any errors, let me know so I can fix them.

With these updates, it'll be easier for me to make new games from now on, so stay tuned for further game updates!

I've got a couple remakes and originals in mind that I hope you'll all enjoy.

I just saw this today. I'm using Chungae and can send you the lists of voc words and main expressions. I teach both 5th and 6th.

Give me the afternoon, and I can get it to you today. I think.....

I completely forgot there's already a page in the curriculum that lists it all.

Here you go. Let me know if this doesn't work best for you, and I'll make word files.

Thanks for sharing the files, but the vocabulary and expressions need to be entered manually.

Someone already added the 5th grade Chunjae book data, but I still need someone to enter that 6th grade book.

If you've got some free time, send me a PM and I'll forward you the instructions.

It takes less than an hour to enter a whole book.

I'd be happy to, however, it's the end of the day, and I won't be in the office until school resumes August 27th. If nobody volunteers at the time, I'll definitely do it.

Added a new game tonight.

Cowboy Game

It's a pretty simple game to understand, but there are teacher and student instructions on the site as always if you're not familiar.

Added/Fixed/Updated a couple things over the break:

- the site will now save your last used lesson and automatically load it, if you reload the page or visit the website again
- fixed the issue where the green/red squares in the Elimination Game didn't update their sizes
- for all multi data games: scroll up for expressions; down for vocabulary
- the Red and Blue game can now use either vocabulary or expressions
*suggestion while using expressions: read the whole sentence. Once you've read the last word, the Ss can slap the correct color

Added another game tonight.

Speed Writer

I don't know who the original creator is, but thanks!

My students have really enjoyed playing it, so I thought I'd recreate it since it can be a difficult one to edit.

I kept a majority of the music and only added 2 Bonobo tracks.

There are 10 levels! The words/letters speed up about 10% with each level.

Levels:
1-2: Simple linear line
3-5: Small waves
6-8: Medium waves and small rotations
9:10 Larger waves and more rotations

With long words or expressions, at the higher levels, it can be really challenging. I would suggest starting off at the lower levels until your students are ready for a challenge.

Btw each round is random (within the level settings), so if your students (or you) are stuck, just skip it.

If you have any questions, let me know!

Another week, another game added.

Sleeping Bears

If you've played Sleeping Elephants, before than you'll know this one.

It's one of my favorite games for review because it uses all 4 learning skills and teamwork is essential.

The 3 key improvements over playing Sleeping Elephants on a PPT:

- You can choose 2, 3 or 4 boxes (1 box/group member), depending on the size and skill level of your classes
- Each round the game will dynamically choose how to split up the word/expression to minimize the difference of what group member need to remember, so students won't complain that they had a harder box
- The text will automatically scale for each individual box, so you don't have to

English instructions are on the site, if you need them.

If you have any questions, let me know!

2 more 'games' added tonight.

Missing Letter and Fix the Mistake

Both have the same hotkeys and formatting.

You can click the header to show the next missing letter/mistake or target specific letters/mistakes by clicking on the  correct holes on the left side. I did this so teacher's can help students that are lost and so we can go through each correct answer with our students.

Furthermore, you can choose where you want to 'edit' the word and the maximum number of missing letters/mistakes.

ex 1) if you want more missing letters/mistakes, just a number from 1-9.
* a word can only have 1 edit per 4 characters, so just choosing 9, won't guarantee that 9 edits will happen. It depends on the word or sentence structure*

ex 2) if you want to focus on word endings, click 'e' to put a blank or another letter at the end of the word

There's three other options for deciding the 'edit' position:
- 's' for the start
- 'm' for middle
- 'a' for anywhere

Some ideas for how to use the game are on the site, but I'm curious to know how other teacher's use these two.

I've got a couple more games in mind, but if you've got any requests, let me know.
