making slime for camp
« on: December 10, 2018, 08:05:32 AM »
Sorry if this topic is not in the right section, but has anyone made slime during their camps? If so, what did you use and where did you buy the materials from?

Thanks in advance.

It's not slime per say, but I'm going to try to make Non-Newtonian Oobleck.

https://www.instructables.com/id/Oobleck/

Basicallyt just need cornstarch, water and food color (optional).

I'll be making slime for my winter camps this year. You can get the PVA glue (white and clear) from major stationery stores and borax from Gmarket (search 붕사). I also have a lot of left over beads from last year when we made dream catchers so we'll incorporate them into the slime as well. You can also get glitter/sparkly things from the stationery stores

Yes! I did almost the exact same ^^

If you can, you can buy everything online.
컬러색소 food coloring
물풀 liquid glue
붕사 Borax (the smallest one we found was 100g and that is still too much)
빤짝이가루 glitter
조은컵 (뚜껑 세트) small cup and lid!

This was a hit was a hit.
If you order the clear korean glue, i recommend buying HAND LOTION/CREAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LIke a huge bottle.
Sometimes students put a litttttttttle too much borax solution so we thinned it out with handcream. it does change the color to more opaque but it works great.

here's the recipe i used:
1 bottle of glue 50mL
1 thing of water the same amount as the glue
1TB of borax solution (u can add more if needed). borax solution: 1 cup warm water + 1tsp borax. mix well.

Borax : May damage fertility & May damage the unborn child

This making slime recipe was used for many years in UK schools with no precautions but it is said now that the students should wear gloves and the slime shouldn't be taken home

i hear what you're sayin! many students were concerned to b/c they know it's a kind of poision but depending on how much you make, just using 50ml of glue, the actual amt of borax actually being used per student is smaller than 1/16. so many a tiny pinch! personally i think making the borax & water solution for the ss beforehand and then putting it into bottles is the most helpful so they never touch the actual powder.

so while i wouldn't worry i think it would be totally fine to explain that to the teachers/students just so they know the actual amount being used.  :cheesy:

For those that don't want to use borax, I did a test run that was successful using glue, baking soda and the contact lens solution. (re-nu, I think. I found mine at Daiso, but I've also seen it in my corner GS)

Sorry to ask, but I read some forums and a lot of people actually fail in making the slime. Correct me if I'm wrong in the process:

1. In a separate bowl, mix warm water (how much?) With 1 tsp of borax

2. In another bowl, add 50g of glue (the amount I will use) and add about 25g (half) of cold water and mix well.

3. Then slowly add the borax solution and keep mixing.

Is this the correct procedure? Or am I missing something out?

Thanks in advanced =)

Sorry to ask, but what does making slime have to do with teaching English? How does this activity build the students' English speaking ability? Seems like there are much more efficient / effective methods. Or am I missing something?

Valid question, but after 9 years of doing camps, this is my reasoning:

1. It's a camp, which a lot of students are 'forced' to attend by their parents.
2. All PPT / worksheets will be in English, which they must listen to and fill out.
3. Students will learn new vocabulary relating to the making of slime, such as add, mix, pour, slowly etc

That applies to the regular school semester, too. Some kids would rather not be there. If they had a choice they'd stay home and play computer games and cellphone games. But they are "forced" to attend by parents / the government.

I'm against pandering.

And I doubt the second two are that true. The amount of English learned mixing toxic borax to make slime is very minimal.

Good point but like regular school, "camps" are daycare for the students.

I asked if we can use our funding for workbooks. Answer no, it is only for materials. So in fact some schools encourage NETS/KETS to lesson plan based on fun activities, not actually learning English.
I have been told my grammar worksheets are too boring. So I have tailored my lessons to reflect what is wanted from the parents, students, and school staff.

Same reason English speaking is not tested here for the most part. It doesn't really matter.

Lesson planning for thirteen day camps making all the materials and ensuring it is fun.

It depends on how you're spinning the lesson. If you are just making slime for the fun of it then I can see how it can seem like it is gearing away from their purpose of camp. However, I am making slime at my camp. We are doing a Harry Potter theme and one day we are in "potions" class hence why they are making slime. The lesson is to test their listening and reading skills. We are seeing which house makes the best slime. They have to follow the directions which are in ENGLISH. They will also be learning vocabulary dealing with measurements. This relates to real life especially if they are ever to go abroad and want to cook. They will need to know the English words. PLUS slime is fun to make and it's a hands on activity that is engaging and not just sitting and doing worksheets.

Here is the slime we are making for camp. I posted the video link so you can see what it looks like.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6xw5c8AWcE

https://littlebinsforlittlehands.com/make-saline-solution-fluffy-slime/

Measure 3-4 heaping cups of foam shaving cream into a bowl. You can also experiment with using less shaving cream for different textures!
Add color! We used neon food coloring, but there are so many choices!
Next, add a 1/2 cup of glue to the shaving cream and mix.
Add 1/2 tsp of baking soda and mix.
Add 1 tablespoon of the saline solution to the mixture and start whipping!
Once you get the mixture thoroughly whipped and incorporated, you can pull it out with your hands!
TIP: Before removing the slime from the bowl, squirt a few drops of saline solution on your hands. The slime can be sticky to start. It can be kneaded in the bowl as well. Don’t add too much extra saline as the consistency gets less sticky with just good ole kneading. Adding to much saline solution can result in an over activated slime with a rubbery texture.

SUGGESTION: Repeat the fluffy slime recipe with different colors or enjoy the one batch! We made a giant batch of yellow fluffy slime the other day by tripling the recipe!

If you are wondering why your slime has failed, make sure to double check your ingredients and measurements.

Also if i were you, i’d make one individual batch beforehand to make sure you know what to expect.
I didn’t realize that id need lotion to make things more stretchy b/c if you put in too much borax or not enough, it breaks when you stretch it or it’s just tooooo sticky. :P

Lol well then i guessed you answered your own question.
If you’re creative, you can make any activity into an interesting English learning opportunity. ;D :cheesy:  8)
