Active Speaking Games
« on: December 10, 2018, 11:03:58 AM »
Hi guys!

What are some of your favorite speaking heavy games that require movement? My elementary students are pretty active. I looked through the old posts and modified some games, but Charades and Last Man Standing (throwing version) are getting old fast.

I'll also appreciate your favorite speaking games for my middle schoolers (they're sedentary lol). They enjoyed Mafia last week but they tend get bored easily haha

Thank you!

With the younger grades (3rd+4th) I've done multiple versions of 4 corners. In order to make it funner I always give each student their own strip of paper to keep their points with. Depending on the theme, I customize the strips. For example, my kids love the shark attack game (somewhere in the game section). Essentially each round a shark comes and eats some of the fishes on the screen. If the shark comes and eats the fish in their corner, they have to tear off one of the fishes on their strips. Maybe because they're young they love the idea that they can physically tear something in class haha. From my experience, 6th graders don't care too much for this kind of game though but the little ones will appreciate it :)  Wish I could help you with older kids but my 6th graders are so against moving any game requiring movement usually flops and 5th grade are all too loud so they can't handle them.

That tweak for four corners sounds great, I'll definitely use that idea if I ever find myself teaching in a primary school again!

I found the evolution game great for 3/4 (5 at a push) too (can find templates etc in loads of the threads in the planning sections).

For older kids, I tend to stick with surveys and that sort of thing, but it can be a mission to motivate them to get off their seats. I've had great success with an activity called 'zombie virus survey' though; the Ss complete a survey of their classmates and sit down when they've finished. When everyone has finished, ask them to stand up and randomly select Ss who have the 'zombie virus'; these students sit down and anyone who surveyed them is also out. Last Ss standing are the winners. The tricky part is choosing the right number of zombies to choose for your particular class size, but trial and error is your friend  ;D

Running dictations can also be quite effective for the older kids, but mileage may vary depending on your students' energy and English levels ...
