A fun and easy lesson! Good listening practice with some pop culture history, too!
I'm doing a lesson on 2002 by Anne Marie with my students. If you haven't heard it, the chorus of the song is a callback to five early 2000s songs. When we listen to the chorus, I show them the old music videos (about a minute of each song), and at the end we watch the whole 2002 music video.
I think the lesson works well because they get to learn a pop song (which they enjoy), and they get to see old music videos from the US with several different genres and styles. So far, they think the *NSYNC video is the funniest. Also, the Anne Marie video has a bunch of references to these old videos, so after watching it they can appreciate the callbacks.
Lesson Plan:
- Quick Warm-up (jumble)
- Part 1: Verse: correct the mistakes (listen once or twice at full speed, then a few times at 80% speed, then go over the answers and explain the lyrics)
- Part 2: Pre-Chorus: choose the correct word (also explain what a Mustang and a hood are)
- Part 3: Chorus (listen to the chorus once or twice, and explain that each part of the chorus is a reference to a song. Play the videos on youtube)
- (1) Britney Spears: Oops I did it again
- (2) Jay Z - 99 Problems
- (3) *NSYNC - Bye Bye Bye (you can explain that this is about breaking up with a girl)
- (4) Nelly - Ride Wit Me
- (5) Britney Spears: ...Baby One More Time
- Watch the Anne Marie 2002 video
P.S. I use the "Video Speed Controller" chrome plugin to slow down and speed up parts of the song for easier listening.
