Housing allowance :undecided: What does that mean? In China, it means that if your rent is £300 per month, you pay £1200 when you arrive and move into your apartment. You never pay just the £300 per month. As a result, you need to budget for 1) your flight to China, 2) your first month in China, 3) 4 months of rental deposit, 4) visa costs, and 5) in some cases, a detailed medical examination which has to be done in your own country. That may not always be covered by the public health system.

Granted, the rent may be lower than what I have quoted, but you will still have to dig into your bank account.
By the way, is this an ad for teachers of "Physics as a foreign language?"

Oh, spare us the "don't shoot the messenger" routine.  Have your company do their own bidding.

Thanks for your feedback, I'm sure it will be of great help for people who want to work in China.  You've made some excellent points about making sure to bring enough money to cover a few months rent since you will need to pay your own deposit.

For people who would like to talk with the agent directly I’m happy to give you further information.  Just send me a message or email and tell me your email address.  Or if you just want the email address then that’s fine too.

I’m just promoting a good opportunity and of course I can mentor you through a lot of the steps if you need that support.  I can give you my personal opinion on the pros and cons and also what to watch out for.

Thanks.

I pointed out the financial issues, which have to be budgeted for. That said, there is a positive side to teaching at public schools in China, and you may have a great rapport with your students there.

I’d highly recommend new or inexperienced teachers to head to Canadian connections or EPIK and apply for a job in Korea.  China is going to be more of a challenge.  I’ve worked in Poland, South Korea and China in university, public school and online.  I’ve also taught from kindergarten English, A1 to C2 English and IELTS/TOEFL exams.  Anyway, let me outline a few advantages and disadvantages of the public school job in China.  This is my opinion so you can judge for yourself if you agree.

Pros:

China is a safe place to live and people are tolerant of people not speaking Chinese.
I have 9 classes a week at the moment and no desk warming.
The salary is quite good but not the best especially since you can make more working in a private school.
No weekly basketball or volleyball games.
No social events.  There are little events that you’ll be asked if you’d like to tag along.
You can teach as you want but you need to try to relate it to the textbook.  I have never taught from the textbook here.
No annoying summer and winter camp.
10 rmb or $1.50 a month Apple Music subscription.  Nice!

Cons
You’ll need to bring enough money to cover your rent for three months
Weekly training events acting like 8 year olds
Not a 12 month contract so half pay during summer or winter holiday.  However you needn’t sit in an empty school for three weeks.
No Chinese teacher in a class of 55 children.

As for the challenges you’ll face in China.  I recommend going to the bigger cities especially Guangzhou and Shenzhen since it’s going to be easier for you to find western style supermarkets and lifestyle.  I’m a huge fan of Shenzhen which is just as good if not much better than Seoul.  The location is amazing as your an hour by metro or ferry to Hong Kong, Macau and Zhuhai.  The city also has enormous parks, one featuring mini replicas of the famous buildings from around the world ‘window of the world’

As for money, we have something like kakao here ‘WeChat’ but it’s super amazing! You’ll find out if you come to China.

Hey Oupa Grey,

Thanks for adding your comments about Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Hong Kong.  I've lived in the north of China specifially Zhengzhou and this is the second time I've lived in Shenzhen.  Personally, I think it's a great city to live in but it rains too much.  I can't really compare with Shanghai since I've never been there.  However, one thing that I enjoy about Shenzhen is that it doesn't get freezing cold - ever!  Whereas, I've been on the freezing streets of Hongdae with temperature of -20 and not a single taxi would stop.  I had to walk all the way to Mapo to get a taxi to Itaewon. It was a terrible night and I've decided that I want to avoid Seoul in the winter now.

As for the 55+ 9 year old in a class and one foreign teacher, it's one of the reasons I've suggested that teachers who haven't done this before go to Korea.

I've done 3 years in Korea so far, about to hopefully start my 4th, and final, year here.
And I still wouldn't want to teach a class of 55 without a co-T. D:

Personally, I have lived and taught in both South Korea and China for more than ten years.   Both countries have merits and drawbacks depending on a number of factors.

As for Shenzhen, in my opinion people ought to judge for themselves if the city is for them.  I like the city because of the location and it’s super modern.  It’s a cashless city and I haven’t touched money here for months.

Also, Apple products can be bought cheaper in Hong Kong and this is the home of DJI!  Welcome to Shenzhen, a great place to live!

Do the schools there have computer screens and computers like in Korea?  Can you do ppt games to supplement the books there?  Is power point usable there?

Also, I heard you don't work for the education office but for a company?

Every classroom has a computer and a projector and some have interactive touch screens.  Therefore you can use your PowerPoints in class.

Yes it’s an agent just like EPIK If people would like to contact the company directly then the email is Elaine.chen@sdeteacher.com and if you can tell them that I sent you that would be great.  Please send me a private message for my real name.  Yes, it’s an agent but it’s well run and they will give you four days stay at a hotel when you arrive which is really basic but better than nothing.

Thank you for the feedback.  I am not sure if you are also able to answer these questions too.  I will email that contact when I am looking.  Sadly, I just signed another renewal EPIK contract this month.  (Always next year.  I want to gather info for the future.  I do want to give it a try.)  I have done some research already and I am aware you have to get your own place and pay a deposit up front?  Do they help you search for a place and can you use a global atm for any cash advances if not enough money is brought in to pay that apartment deposit upfront?

Congratulations on renewing your contract with EPIK which is a good decision.

As for help with housing, from the moment you arrive you’ll be assigned with an assistant who will if requested will meet you at the airport, help you find a house which is usually close to your school but you can choose to wherever you like.  Or if money is really an issue you may choose to live in school housing if it’s available.

I’d advise that you bring $2000 for your first month which will be more than enough to get settled.
