Housing allowance What does that mean? In China, it means that if your rent is £300 per month, you pay £1200 when you arrive and move into your apartment. You never pay just the £300 per month. As a result, you need to budget for 1) your flight to China, 2) your first month in China, 3) 4 months of rental deposit, 4) visa costs, and 5) in some cases, a detailed medical examination which has to be done in your own country. That may not always be covered by the public health system. Granted, the rent may be lower than what I have quoted, but you will still have to dig into your bank account. By the way, is this an ad for teachers of "Physics as a foreign language?"
