  Housing allowance What does that mean? In China, it means that if your rent is £300 per month, you pay £1200 when you arrive and move into your apartment. You never pay just the £300 per month. As a result, you need to budget for 1) your flight to China, 2) your first month in China, 3) 4 months of rental deposit, 4) visa costs, and 5) in some cases, a detailed medical examination which has to be done in your own country. That may not always be covered by the public health system.

   Granted, the rent may be lower than what I have quoted, but you will still have to dig into your bank account.

I’d highly recommend new or inexperienced teachers to head to Canadian connections or EPIK and apply for a job in Korea.  China is going to be more of a challenge.  I’ve worked in Poland, South Korea and China in university, public school and online.  I’ve also taught from kindergarten English, A1 to C2 English and IELTS/TOEFL exams.  Anyway, let me outline a few advantages and disadvantages of the public school job in China.  This is my opinion so you can judge for yourself if you agree.

Pros:

China is a safe place to live and people are tolerant of people not speaking Chinese.
I have 9 classes a week at the moment and no desk warming.
The salary is quite good but not the best especially since you can make more working in a private school. 
No weekly basketball or volleyball games.
No social events.  There are little events that you’ll be asked if you’d like to tag along.
You can teach as you want but you need to try to relate it to the textbook.  I have never taught from the textbook here.
No annoying summer and winter camp.
10 rmb or $1.50 a month Apple Music subscription.  Nice!

Cons
You’ll need to bring enough money to cover your rent for three months
Weekly training events acting like 8 year olds
Not a 12 month contract so half pay during summer or winter holiday.  However you needn’t sit in an empty school for three weeks.
No Chinese teacher in a class of 55 children.

As for the challenges you’ll face in China.  I recommend going to the bigger cities especially Guangzhou and Shenzhen since it’s going to be easier for you to find western style supermarkets and lifestyle.  I’m a huge fan of Shenzhen which is just as good if not much better than Seoul.  The location is amazing as your an hour by metro or ferry to Hong Kong, Macau and Zhuhai.  The city also has enormous parks, one featuring mini replicas of the famous buildings from around the world ‘window of the world’

As for money, we have something like kakao here ‘WeChat’ but it’s super amazing! You’ll find out if you come to China.

And I still wouldn't want to teach a class of 55 without a co-T. D:

Personally, I have lived and taught in both South Korea and China for more than ten years.   Both countries have merits and drawbacks depending on a number of factors.

As for Shenzhen, in my opinion people ought to judge for themselves if the city is for them.  I like the city because of the location and it’s super modern.  It’s a cashless city and I haven’t touched money here for months. 

Also, Apple products can be bought cheaper in Hong Kong and this is the home of DJI!  Welcome to Shenzhen, a great place to live!

Every classroom has a computer and a projector and some have interactive touch screens.  Therefore you can use your PowerPoints in class.

Congratulations on renewing your contract with EPIK which is a good decision. 

As for help with housing, from the moment you arrive you’ll be assigned with an assistant who will if requested will meet you at the airport, help you find a house which is usually close to your school but you can choose to wherever you like.  Or if money is really an issue you may choose to live in school housing if it’s available.

I’d advise that you bring $2000 for your first month which will be more than enough to get settled.
