Crazy laws
« on: May 17, 2011, 11:12:00 am »
Students liked it because the laws in America was too shocking..

I used this after the final exam last year to my 3rd graders.

This is cool but I think it uses some awkward English sometimes. It might be a dialect thing though, I've been surprised what some NETs think is normal before ^_^ Second opinion anyone?

"Going off more than one alarm clock at a time." Sounds wrong to me, should maybe be "Setting off more than one alarm clock at a time." ?

Nice! Good lesson, thanks for sharing! This will be fun. I think it's OK if the students are high level (and you are alone). With your Co-worker to explain/translate the maddness to lower levels, happy days!

It would be a good lesson if not for the fact that most of the "crazy laws" that abound the internet are bullshit. I doubt you'd be able to find a source for any of the supposed laws listed here.

Did anyone actually show the videos to their students? What were the students reactions?

Wow. I haven't been around these boards for too long.. and this is the first time I've seen a Korean teacher post their own lessons. Kudos to you! Pretty good lesson as well! Think I'll try it out next week =D

Despite the fact that I'm pretty sure all these laws are made up  ;) I liked this lesson a lot. My school is pretty conservative though, and don't think they'd be comfortable with the videos, so I made this powerpoint instead, using the "clean" bits from the videos.

Thanks again for posting this lesson kiwie00!

I turned this lesson into a powerpoint and added some speaking questions to get the kids talking.

I showed the videos in class. I had to pause and explain them a lot. For my students (all boys) surprisingly they focused more on the funny entrances that the police made rather than when girls were in bikinis. So the videos were ok.

This lesson worked really well! Thanks for the great idea!

Here's some links for some of the laws I Googled:

Iowa - horse eating a fire hydrant - http://americashorsedaily.com/outdated-horse-laws/

Florida - singing in a swimsuit - http://www.ehow.com/list_6365944_wacky-florida-laws.html

Alaska - moose and helicopter - http://www.dumblaws.com/laws/united-states/alaska

North Dakota - hat and dancing (and many others) - http://www.totallyuselessknowledge.com/laws.php

Kansas - hunting bunnies from a motorboat - http://www.deanesfield.connectfree.co.uk/magaz/lwani.html
