English Program in Korea EPIK (Public schools all over Korea)

EPIK is a department within the Korean Ministry of Education that oversees hiring Native English teachers for all of the school boards throughout Korea. Due the fact that they have so many positions to fill, EPIK designates certain recruitment agencies to assist with hiring and Canadian Connection is one of the designated agencies.

Schedule: Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 5:00
Classroom Hours: 22 teaching hours per week, overtime a possibility
School Levels: Elementary Schools (up to grade 6 but typically only working with grade 3-6), Middle Schools (grade 7-9) and High School (grades 10-12). Most positions are in Elementary and Middle Schools
Vacation: 26 working days + national holidays
Salary: 2,000,000 – 2,500,000 Korean won per month
Settlement Allowance: 300,000 Won
Severance Bonus: 1 month salary
Housing: non-shared housing supplied, schools pay rent, teachers cover util.
Airfare: Entrance allowance of 1,300,000 Korean Won reimbursed to cover your airfare and an Exit Allowance of 1,300,000 Korean Won to cover your airfare before you leave Korea at the end of your contract.
Start dates: approx. February 17th followed by a one-week orientation in Korea. There are additional start dates in March/April, but these will mostly be in the provincial areas.
Contract Length: 1 year with option to renew
Locations: Various placements throughout the country including the locations listed below. Specific placements are decided by EPIK supervisors just before or during orientation so we specific location requests aren’t guaranteed but you will be able to indicate one preference in the application process. EPIK supervisors will inform teachers of their final placement information during orientation in Korea

City Placements: Seoul, Busan, Incheon, Daejeon, Daegu, Ulsan, Gwangju, Sejong
Provincial Placements: Gyeonggi, Gangwon, North Chungcheong, South Chungcheong, North Gyeongsang, South Gyeongsang, North Jeolla, South Jeolla, Jeju
2nd interview with EPIK coordinators via skype is required


Private Institutes in various metro/suburban cities

Schedule: Monday to Friday
Classroom Hours: 30 teaching hours per week
Vacation: 10 days + national holidays
Salary: 2,200,000 – 2,300,000 Korean won per month
Severance Bonus: 1 month salary
School Type: various levels of students - kindergarten, elementary, and middle school aged
Housing: non-shared housing supplied, schools pay rent, teachers cover util.
Airfare: One way ticket airfare is provided according to contract conditions
Start dates: Monthly start dates (February-June)
Contract Length: 1 year with option to renew
Locations: various metropolitan/ suburban locations - Seoul, Incheon, Gimpo, Daegu, Gwangju
2nd interview with schools via phone/skype is required

2.2 with 10 vacation days, One way ticket, and 30 hours of teaching? You are kinda lowballing those hagwon job offers. One of the only benefits of hagwons is that they usually offer slightly higher pay. 2.2 for all of those teaching hours is borderline insulting.

More room for negotiations with hagwons of course! The public offices of education in Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Incheon, and Gyeonggi pay 2.0 million per month for candidates with basic qualifications (degree + TEFL/teaching cert). There's a trade-off that applicants consider: more work hours but smaller class sizes, less vacation but higher pay - biggest advantage vs public school is having control over location.
