I have not forgotten, nor will I ever.

I had the pleasure of seeing Gretzky play in the Quebec City PeeWee hockey tournament which takes place every year during the greatest winter carnival on earth. Nonetheless, Gretzky was playing with Brantford in the 1974 tournament and scored 26 goals!

He was a superstar then. I also saw Gretzky play with the Indianapolis Racers and the Oilers in the WHA and of course the Oilers in the NHL.

In my opinion, the 2nd greatest player to ever play the game. The greatest...#4 Bobby Orr, whom I also had the pleasure of seeing several times.

I love the Bruins, especially when they destroy those filthy stinking Habs: 8-1 and 3-1 recently hahahahahaha The Bruins had a great game 2-0 over the 'Canes yesterday. I watch the games on VIP Box Sports free streaming. I just give the students a bunch of worksheets and watch the game on my computer in class. Nice!

Is there any other game that compares to the NHL? Anything??? Anywhere???

I'm not even Canadian and I think the guy is a master and appreciate what he did.

Ignorance, apparently, is an excuse.

Wayne Gretzky has had the single greatest impact on his sport, more than any other athlete in any other sport that can be named. Numbers don't lie.

My favourite Larry Bird story of all time is when he was asked, after his retirement, why he always looked up into the rafters of Boston Garden during the national anthem. Was he getting his game face on? Was he planning how to deal with Magic? Kareem? Laimbeer? Jordan?

No.

He was staring at Bobby Orr's retired jersey!

I'm all about Boston, man. Bruins, Celtics, Patriots, Red Sox

Name ONE NHL team that has an 80% Win rate over more than 100 years of competition...!

To further clarify: I was in Canada in 1972 when Paul Henderson scored THE GOAL that won the series against Russia/Soviet Union, and started to watch Ice Hockey a lot more (altho' I must confess - back in the WHL days I was a Winnipeg fan...!)

I lived in Edmonton during the 1980s and was there when the Oilers won the first of their string of Stanley Cups - I well remember the celebrations (my mates and I joined the throngs downtown - even the cops were smiling) and the whole atmosphere...
I was an Oilers fan, and enjoyed watching Ice Hockey, and do agree with the OP regarding Gretzky's status.
I just wish more North Americans looked a bit further afield once in a while to check out other equally impressive sports codes...

Unless you're a supporter of that team I can see being so dominant as getting old quickly.  I think the fact that team dynasties are not that frequent makes it more interesting and makes it more exciting when they do happen.  You know it won't last.  Now, I wish my hometown Leafs would stop being so consistent.  They haven't won the Cup in my lifetime.

As for only one comment on Gretzky, I'm old enough to remember the frenzy that surrounded him when he came into the NHL and the fact he has been shoved down our throats so often as a Canadian hero and legend that hearing of him spoken of in glowing terms has become routine.  If a Gretzky stamp has come out or will be issued I don't think it would even register.  The Bay even had a Gretzky line of clothing at one point.  If you grew up in Canada you've been over exposed to the great one.

There's been 12 different Stanley Cup champion teams since 2000, and one season was cancelled due to a lockout - 2005.

That's what makes it the greatest game in the world, there is no super dominant team. Name another sport which routinely has 4-5-6 or 7 minutes of non-stop hard-hitting end-to-end action and full speed. Certainly not rugby or football or baseball or basketball...as for soccer, it's a great cure for insomnia.

Nope, the NHL rules uber alles.

I think the main flaw with ice hockey is that you can't see exactly what's happening clearly enough when someone scores a goal and it seems like a lot of luck involved anyway with such a small goal. It's like you just whack it as hard as you can and hope for the best.  I'm sure ice hockey fans will tell me that's wrong but that's the way it seems to me (and all the other people in the world who prefer watching football)  I agree though that football's flaw is the slow build up.

Also, it's a rich person's sport: to play at any non-casual level, you need to buy like a gazillion won worth of gear just to participate. That's a pretty big draw back, imho.

I'll agree that it's  pretty fast-paced.

While I love hockey, I also really love the utter tension that is a pitcher's duel in baseball. Also, basketball and NFL have amazing feats of athletic explosiveness that you don't get in other sports (sorry Rugby, you're great, but there is a serious gap in raw athleticism and explosive power, which in turn is one of the good things about rugby- it's perhaps the best balance of speed, strength, skill, and stamina). Golf has amazing concentration and fine motor skill. Figure skating blends artistry, agility, technique, and power. Tennis is a great tactical duel of technique between individuals or pairs. And hockey wonderfully blends strength, acceleration, skill, agility, and teamwork with great tension.

Not everything has to be slam-bang action. Also, the way some hockey fans, Canadians in particular, carry on about hockey vs other sports is a bit silly.

Gretzky himself said that if he was a kid today (well, he said it a few years ago) his parents would not be able to pay for him to be in hockey.

As a Canadian, one sport which hasn't been mentioned which involves incredible skill is curling. If you ain't ever tried it, do so. It's an amazing game.

There's a reason that when you think of sports people who rise up to international level that come from developing/poor countries, they typically play sports like running and football/soccer, both of which can be played in childhood without masses of gear and equipment and be done anywhere.

This. It's such an incredibly underrated sport. I will admit, it's a bit boring to watch, but playing it is so much fun. Most people don't understand the level of strategy and skill that goes into each play. Wish it got the love it deserves.

Agreed! I was right into Curling - and got pretty good at it; there were Bonspiels everywhere back then (my university History Department used to host a pretty major bonspiel every year)... when I lived in Canada from the 70s to the mid-90s! It really is a great game to play, and the socializing aspect of Bonspiels and Curling tournaments is a blast!!

The Pyeongchang Olympics was a great time to teach my students the sport of curling. It was February, the end of the school year, and I board markered a long desk up and used 100 won coins as the "rocks". They learned how to throw for the "button", to stay "in the house", to "guard", "take out" and even how to "curl" teammates "sweep" by blowing air. We had 8 rocks in an "end" (the captain throws the 8th rock, the "hammer") and played 10 "ends". The two teams on the scoreboard they represented are curling powerhouses Canada and Sweden (I mention Norway and Finland as neighbors also great at it).

After demonstrating the way to play and practicing the vocabulary, i give a quick q&a  verbal quiz (putting coins in the house and having them calculate points was a good test of their grasp) and whomever understands best becomes the captain ("skip") of a team.

Some classes make it to the 7th end, some only finish the 4th end. It is a quick hour of edutainment. One student told me a couple of weeks later she taught her mom how the game was played when they were watching "Young-mi! Young-mi!" :)
