My dad got both his knee joints replaced on the NHS. He didn't need to wait 15 months.

Yes, there a lot of wrong things with the NHS but I would still rather choose that than face bankruptcy in the US system.

If it costs 30 grand to have a kid born in the US you'd think the birthrate would be even lower than Korea's. Though in fact it's higher than most of Europe. Is that because poor people can get it done for free or something?

There is a big difference, though. Most Canadians and Western
Europeans would think it utterly repugnant if someone, like a
neighbor, was denied healthcare or medicine and died. Americans
seem to see it as a norm.

Either insurance covers it.

Or they just never pay the bill. (Very common.)

Canadians (the OP is Canadian) love to bash the US. But notice how they never start threads about what a horrible country North Korea is, how messed up South Africa is, etc.

If an American doesnt pay a hospital bill, nothing happens to them. Except their credit rating is hurt, so if looking for a house, all they can get is in a ghetto neighborhood where people speak Ebonics. Last I checked almost all Americans have health insurance. And most college grads have employer provided health insurance.

92% of Americans have health insurance. For those who dont, they cant be denied for lack of it. The hospital just hopes theyll pay the bill. (Offer to pay it upfront - ensuring you actually will pay - and you can get a big discount.)

American life expectancy is way longer than the global average. Life satisfaction and happiness levels are, too. In fact its the #1 country others want to immigrate to. Its not as bad as youre making it out to be.

If you were designing a country's health care system from scratch, you'd probably want to consider things like cost efficiency, internal coherence, bureaucratic transparency and clear delegations of decision-making power on the provider side. On the user end, you want accessibility, dependability, affordability and successful public health outcomes.

So considering these factors, would you really use the US as a model?

In the United States, if youre a winner in life, youll have access to the best health care in the world, fully covered by your employer. ...but... thats not everyone. So yeah, sadder situation for some. Also, those criticizing the American health care system dont even fully understand it and all its complexities.

A phrase like "fully covered by your employer" suggests that you know very little about the system and its complexities. That would imply that your employer pays the full cost of your insurance, and the insurance covers the full cost of your medical expenses, whatever the amount and whatever the reason for the expenses.

How many people do you know with coverage like that?
