EPIK Workshops / Conferences

Hey good people of Waygook,

Our province has two workshops/meetings/conferences (whatever you want to call them) each semester which are compulsory for everybody to attend. As a hypothetical teacher attending one of these events (or even better, if you actually have to attend them!)  what sort of topic(s) would you find useful to cover/want to discuss with your fellow EPIKers? Or if you were to give a ~45-minute presentation/workshop, what would you do? It's like taking a stab in the dark trying to think of new ideas that I think people would find a) useful b) interesting when there are many different levels of experience / teaching styles etc in the room. Just wondering if there are any common topics folks would like to (re)cover ...   :smiley:

I think we all need more work on is class room management.  Perhaps asking around to the NET community about what issues we face during class.

Like the talking while instructions are happening or destroying textbooks during class.  Training in that could be helpful to all.

New games and activities. I really just want those from the meeting. If I go to an Epik meeting and I don't have at least one new activity to use in the classroom, it was a waste of my damn time.

I would like ideas on approaching the text book material in different ways to make it less boring. I stick to the book because it's what they are tested on. I have some ideas regarding this but even that is 'getting old' and boring to the students. I do role playing with the material now, so everyone gets a chance to talk and I can get a feel for their progress.
But I second classroom management, talking during class, students who refuse to do activities.

if i was a new teacher, i'd find classroom management techniques useful, as well as games that can be adapted for various things. also, 2-3 minute time fillers.

actually, general lesson structure might even be useful

A few new activities to do! I find my students who are in their second year with me are getting bored of the same, like, twelve I tend to cycle through.

     New and interesting classroom management techniques is always very much appreciated. It might be nice to have it situational based: bring up specific scenarios and have people who've experienced it offer their 2 bits etc etc (ie "What should one do when your resident grade 2 troublemaker throws a chair out the window and then starts overturning desks halfway through the lesson?"...  :shocked:  :rolleyes:).

  New activities are always nice, especially ones that are "total participation activities".

 Our region had a workshop that listed common work-related phrases (for the classroom, for dealing with immigration, for talking with faculty etc) and their translations, which has definitely come in handy a few times!



    And for the love of Jeebus, no more .ppt presentations on cultural appreciation from a 6 month EPIK teacher!  :cry:
   (they're nice and all that, but they're not helpful and shouldn't be in a teaching workshop)

maybe some TPR activities that can be used in the classroom. I think my students appreciate the games that involve them being up and moving around while using the target language in some way.

I completely agree. New English game or activities. Lessons on how to make the book more fun. It's getting repetitive and it doesn't help if the  kids are going to be with you for 2 years. It's tiring.

Just a word of caution about TPR with Korean students, it tends to work well with grades 1 ~3 ....maybe 4

5th graders and 6th graders will give you total death stares if you ask them to mime something or get out of their seats to do an action.  Believe me I've tried it here.  I used Genki (can't remember how it's spelled but some of you ESL vets may know who I'm talking about)  I used his TPR lessons and while he used it with his Japanese kids and they all did it an enjoyed it, here in Korea I was looked at like "Teacher, please go bury yourself."   So just some advice about TPR.  TPR is helpful though.  Depending on what it is.

Many thanks for the input everyone! Seems classroom management and new classroom activities are the big ones. Unfortunately they've been covered many times before so the presenters have been asked to stay away from them for the foreseeable future. I'll bring it up with our co-ordinator after the next meeting though and see if we can bring in a more regular classroom management workshop (as I think it's something even vet teachers can benefit from having refreshers on, 100% myself included, if my first class today is anything to go by  :cry:).

Thanks again for the ideas, I'll be coming back to this thread again in the future for sure  ;D

I think NET expectations should be talked about.  A lot of us can't tolerate talking while the teacher is talking.  Most times our co-teachers don't realize that this hinders our ability to teach.  And most co-teachers don't translate what we say to the students in a timely manner.  So a lot of the lower level students choose to ignore us and treat us as background noise and continue their own conversations while we are talking.  I know it's hard to focus on someone that is talking in a language you don't know so that's why our co-teachers need to be more on top of things with us in the classroom.

And at the same time, some translate too timely. I've had some who would translate every line in a story we were reading/listening to immediately after the line finished, not allowing the students time to internalize what they just heard.
