Hello! I decided to share my winter camp materials since I feel it was relatively successful. With a few modifications and actual teaching skills (it’s my first year… I’m working on it) I’m sure this would be even better! I put a lot of work into making the PPTs pretty, so please feel free to use!

I taught over 2 weeks.
Week 1: Grades 5 and 6 together (without co-teacher, 2.5 hrs)
Week 2: Grades 3 and 4 separately (with co-teacher, 1 hr 20 mins each)

Breakdown:
Day 1 - What do You Want to Be? / Actors
Day 2 - Police Officers
Day 3 - Artists
Day 4 - Athletes
Day 5 - Chefs

DAY 2 - POLICE OFFICERS

This was my favourite day!!! I loved learning about forensics and crime scenes as a kid so getting to do this was fun for me too!  Not to brag but the PPT is also a work of art

5-6th Grades

3--4th Grades **There are less activities since I had less time with them**

Observe the Crime Scene: I set up a fake crime scene in the classroom down to the crime tape and evidence markers (pictures included). The prep time for this is COMPLETELY WORTH IT. The kids went crazy when they saw it first thing coming into the classroom. This got them engaged and it was a good segue into learning some of the crime scene vocab. We all huddled around the crime scene and named all the things they saw and tried to guess what happened. They filled in a ‘Draw the Crime Scene worksheet’ after this.

Fingerprint Activities were done in STATIONS.
A.    Graphite fingerprints: (ALL GRADES) For this, all you need is tape, a pencil and the worksheet I provided. See instructions in PPT.

B.   Balloon fingerprints: (GRADES 4-6) Use a marker or an ink pad to colour your thumb and stamp it on a balloon. Blow up the balloon and see your fingerprint larger than life! Make sure you get balloons that are easy to blow (3rd graders have a hard time with this) 

C.    Fingerprint Lifting: (GRADE 5-6 ONLY) Students used baby powder, makeup brushes, and tape to lift their fingerprints. They need a smooth surface to put their oily fingerprint so I laminated squares of black construction paper. To lift the fingerprints, 2 inch clear packing tape works best. After they dust and lift the fingerprint, have them put it on another laminated card (shows up better this way). They can attach their fingerprint card to the worksheet titled ‘Fingerprint Typing’. There are no instructions in the attached PPT because I demonstrated it in front of them. ASIDE: I tried to do this with the 4th grade but apparently their motor skills aren’t quite there yet??

Detective Work (GRADE 5-6 ONLY)
I had a narrative for the 5-6th graders’ crime scene. The idea was that someone broke into the classroom to steal the answers to an English test. The criminal broke the window and left behind a bloody hand print and some cookies given to them by an old lady. (see picture attached)

The last activity had them act as suspects and detectives. There are 8 different suspects. They were given a set of questions to ask each suspect. The suspects had to answer with what was on their ‘suspect profile’. The detectives would then take notes, and after interrogating all the suspects, try to determine who committed the crime. To make it simple for them, they just had to look at the suspect’s alibi and whether their fingerprint matched the evidence. Based on those two things, there were two possible criminals. I made them vote for which of the two they thought was the criminal. If they pay attention to the extra information, they will see that the cookies left behind belonged to one of the students. NOTE:  the locations in this narrative are specific to Busan, so feel free to change them to your area. Play it up like the crime is real! The students will be more engaged that way.   

DAY 3 - ARTISTS

I only did this day for grades 3-4 because of New Year’s Day during 5-6th grade’s week. They just reviewed colours and feelings and then they painted. Acrylics, brushes, sponges, and canvases. Yup, that was it, but they liked it. Our 3rd and 4th grade camps were shorter so we didn't have to do a lot.

DAY 5 – CHEFS

Blind Taste Test: Students learned taste and texture vocabulary. Then I gave them blindfolds and had them taste 4 different kinds of snacks/foods. After, tasting each food, they filled out a worksheet with what tastes and textures they felt. I had them taste sour candy, strawberry cream cheese, salt and vinegar chips, and spicy curry. I tried to hit all the tastes/textures with these. Most of them liked all of it, but it was hilarious seeing them freak out before trying the food!

Mug Cake Baking: Students baked a mug cake. There was quite a lot to prepare for this and when I did it alone (gr 5-6), it took a lot of time. Make sure you have more than a couple microwaves on hand. I would test baking the cakes on each microwave to find the optimal baking time as the wattage can vary. You will, however, notice that this baking time won’t matter much in the end as the students will have varying consistencies of batter no matter how well you help them with the portioning of ingredients. 

if you have extra time, just put on ‘Ratatouille’ or ‘Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs’ while they eat to fit in with the theme.
