Welcome Back ideas after corona virus break?
« on: March 27, 2020, 08:52:24 am »
Hi all,

I'm wondering what everyone's ideas are for their lessons when we (eventually) return to school after this strange, prolonged time off. For me, this is my second year at the same school so introductions aren't needed, but I wanted to at least do one fun lesson welcoming the students back and getting their brains used to sitting in the English classroom after such a long break. Problem is, doing the typical "what did you do during your vacation?" is a little tricky when we're in the midst of a pandemic and the answer for most will almost certainly be "I stayed home and watched tv." Sounds a little boring. There's also the issue of time management; starting school a month late puts everyone quite a bit behind in lessons. Would it be better to just jump straight into the book?

Right now my idea is the first day back will be a welcome back fun day where we review the classroom rules then play some games in English (my plan is 2 truths 1 lie for older students and bingo with vocabulary from last year for younger students) and then jump into the book in the second lesson, but I was interested in hearing what other ideas everyone had.

We're planning to start right in, after brief orientation (quick review of expectations).  In the books at my school, 4th grade is What's your name?, 5th is Where are you from? and 6th is What grade are you in?  Those are good enough starting off places.  I also have a quiz game ready for review of what they studied last year.

My school is more or less going to jump right in. The first lessons will have a short introduction & review section, but we'll largely focus on the new vocabulary and phrases.

However, there are a couple of homeroom classes in one grade which have an extra English class due to the way the schedules are this year. In order to keep all homeroom classes at the same textbook progression, we're going to have a full introduction/review/self-reflection lesson for the extra classes, then for their second class/the rest of the grade's first class we'll use the textbook.

A coronavirus lesson.

Intro: what is a corona? Why is it called coronavirus? Show a picture of a solar eclipse. And a picture.of the virus. Get them to guess that the virus looks like it has a corona around it. (For middle school classes i'll show a pic of a bottle of Corona beer and how my friend used to say "I like Corona." -should get a laugh).

Review geography and numbers.
Vocab "infection", deaths and "rate".

I'll give them a list of number of infections and deaths in descending order (most to least) and leave the country blank and in groups of two they'll fill in the countries, then we'll review together.

Then How to stay safe?
Get them to state and we'll all write down (in any order they mention):
1. Wash your hands. Use hand sanitizer.
2. Don't touch your face.
3. (Social distancing) (students might say here: stay away from others; don't be too close; don't go into crowds (together they with help will eventually state it somehow.
4. Stay home
5. If sick, get a virus test.
6. Wear a mask.

Then we will re-rank them. Which is most important (change to number 1). Which is second most important? Etc.
