Recording of my online class for reference
« on: April 08, 2020, 12:39:28 pm »
I don't know if this will help anyone but here is part of my online class I recorded earlier for anyone to use as reference. It's fairly straight forward and very off the book I know, but it was what was asked of me from my co-teacher.  Anyways I hope this helps :)

Your lesson looks good!
I see you used Screen-o-matic, so did I. I found it gave me many problems with recording blank screens or pixelating parts of the video. Was this your experience at all?

It cut off after 15 minutes but this was very well done. You have so much composure lol, I'd be a wreck once the screen starts acting up or the wrong clip is playing. Just one question: Did you assign them any homework/worksheet at the end?

Yeah unfortunately screen-o-matic only allows up to 15 minutes of recording then you have to launch a new application. There are definitely other applications you could use but screen-o-matic seems to be fairly straightforward imo.
I was definitely a hot mess at first too haha, fortunately you can pause the recording, collect yourself and then continue recording from where you left off :)
I do have a 2nd part where I did assign them homework, it's just 3 comprehension questions asking them to use the key phrases correctly. I then gave the video and the questions in a word document to my co-teacher and she just handled the rest :)

Thanks! I was hesitant to use it at first but it was fairly user friendly.
I didn't get pixelating of video during the recording but I did notice that the yellow circle around my mouse did cause some pixelation while I was pointing to words and such.  I do know that there is an option to turn that off so I will try that next time and see how that goes.  I didn't get any blank screen recordings though so I'm not too sure about that.

Great video!  I also teach at a technical high school and I'm stunned that your students can handle that material.  Do you usually teach with a coteacher?

Haha I think you are giving most of my students too much credit, I was also surprised that my co-teacher wanted me to do this. Previously I only really did games with them. I think due to it being an online class she decided to give me the textbook material instead.
Yes I usually teach with my co-teacher but she usually just maintains order or helps translate things from time to time.

This is good. Are your Co-t's teaching at all?

Thanks! My co-teachers are doing the reading and writing portions of the textbook while I am doing the speaking and listening.

This looks like a fairly stressful procedure--rubbing your belly and patting your head at the same time.  I'm glad my (elementary) school went with uploading materials rather than live online.

So, taking tips from Ronnie and theman (new sitcom?) I learned how to convert some of my ppts to mp4s.  But my equipment is a 5,800 W headset/mic, and I have had a lot of trouble with background static.  Unbelievably distracting.  So I futzed around with the audio settings for hours, and I've gotten I think the best results I can.

I uploaded a couple examples to YT to get feedback from some friends.  Since this thread is here, I figure some of you guys might have a look.

Is the static problematic? Does my voice sound, well, not good, but listenable?  Levels? Any other thoughts on content also appreciated.  Thanks.

I see what you mean by the ‘static/muffley’ sound, but i think its great.
In general you seem to have a really nice, clear speaking voice!
How lucky your coteachers and students are :)

I don't usually log in late like this but I thought I should and say it sounds great Mr C.  Clear, not rushed, and very soft tones and easy to follow.  I don't think it'll ever be 'perfect' by someone's own high standards.  The main thing I wanted from my PPT narrations was for it to be clear for the students so when I played it to my co-teachers, my main thing was 'that is clear, right?  You're not struggling to make out what I'm saying?'  Like you, I originally had a 5000 won mic-socket connection microphone and then just sacked it off and bought a 20 000 won gamers one that uses a USB.  Sounded much better.  You have to mind your Ps though as they don't transfer well onto a narration.

Seriously good voice Mr C!!  :-*

Mr. C I thought yours was amazingly well done! I was thinking about going that route as well and turning my ppt into mp4s as well. Now that I watched yours maybe I should have because it was great. Your voice was also very clear, I started by using the microphone on my headphones but then had to settle for the laptop mic because the audio wasn't being recorded correctly, in comparison yours is very clear!

I second this. You could be a VO artist, seriously.

Levels were a little on the low side, I think? If it can't be fixed then maybe a standard disclaimer at the beginning of your videos would help (i.e. 'Please make sure you have the following materials ready (pen, textbook, notebook, etc.) AND remember to turn up your volume.)

To everyone else who's submitted a sample vid... I still have no idea how your students follow along. If it was my video it would be full of written prompts and Korean translations (probably supplied by my wife). Maybe it's because I'm in a smaller city way down south. Or maybe I just underestimate their ability (or willingness to concentrate) in general.

Thanks everybody for all the swell feedback, it's good to hear.

theman, yeah, I agree, I think the levels are low too, but when I tried bumping up, the static went up, like exponentially, so ...

alex, I looked up ASMR, and I'm still not sure what it is; but it does worry me a bit that I could be lulling my students into a state of deep relaxation where they won't learn anything.
