Games/activities can be done online easily?
« on: April 14, 2020, 02:21:26 pm »
Here are a couple I've found so far.

https://matchthememory.com/dontruncheonjae/
Card matching game: You can make your own personalised card matching memory game. Upload pictures to put on the cards and send the link to students.

https://www.hangmanwords.com/create
Hangman: You can use sentences as answers where other websites usually limit you to single words.

https://www.proprofs.com/games/
Customisable online wordsearches, crosswords, hangman, unscrambling words.

Any other similar things would be appreciated.
So far I've recorded a video of myself explaining the expressions (using screencast-o-matic) and then send links for some activities to do after they've watched the video.

I found these websites to be pretty cool too

https://wordwall.net/
It is great for all sorts of word-based games.

https://www.bookwidgets.com/
This program requires a subscription but it has a 60 day free trial (no card info). I have been making really nice worksheets with it and it is working very smoothly.

Is it just me? wordwall seems to be really slow.

It is a little on the slower side, especially while creating the material. I have played test games and it seems to be a bit faster on the student side.  I mostly use it as a very short optional warm up game.  It is definitely a great idea website that needs to be improved though.

Just tried the memory match. Terrific! I  will use it for upper and lower case alphabet letters for 3 graders.

Thanks!

I've been using https://www.educandy.com/
There's word searches, noughts and crosses, crosswords, hangman, anagrams, match-up, memory, and multiple choice.
I like it because you just need to put in the words and you'll have a unique link for your game. Plus it's cute annnd free.
Here are a few that I already made for reference.

Since we were doing so many voiceovers for lessons I made a story in Powerpoint and then voiced over it (using screencastify). It's like the thing in the textbook where they read/listen and repeat using the target vocabulary. I wanted to upload it as practice for 4G L1 Pt 2. It was obviously time intensive but it came out pretty nice and it made me feel like I was trying when all the rest of the things I upload are worksheets
There's PowerPoint for you to voice over if you want. I'm also attaching the one I voiced over.

Do you think these are ok for low level 4-6th graders? Some of the games seem a bit difficult to me, but I don't really know what level they are at.

Thank you all for sharing your resources. I discovered this site for making interactive worksheets, I was stumped on how to create worksheets that wouldn't require students to print out a physical copy.
https://www.liveworksheets.com/

You create a word doc/pdf or jpg and upload it on the site. You can add the interactive elements on the site, quick, easy and no need for code. Thereafter, you can choose whether it sends the results to you or if students can check their score online.

Here is an example of one I made for Middle School First Grade:

These are awesome. Just curious, are you able to monitor students' work? or do the students play the games at their own discretion?

Yeah tbh I think that some are a little difficult. My coteacher likes them though and we work with those grades too. But, I think she's just making these optional activities.

I don't think you can monitor their work. And yeahh, I believe my coteacher is just making them optional. Something that they can do for fun if they wanted to.

(Un)Surprisingly this was also what I had planned. I've already made these so feel free to use them :)
They're broken down into 4/5 letter groups based on my textbook. I'll justify my font choice by saying that this uses a (more standard?) 'a' and 'g'. I'm not sure if it's more standard but it's preferred by me as I think it's more simple for my students.

I'll be making letter/picture matches too, they match with alphabet videos I made for my students.

Those are cool games; thanks for making. Is it possible to add native speaker audio saying the letters? That’d be really helpful for the students’ language development. (If it can’t be done on this particular site, anyone know of one on which it can?)

Thanks for the Educandy link. I've put a few things together to share with my co-teachers (I have 3), and they all seem to really like it. They've taken on the bulk of the work, so it'll be nice to contribute something.

I think this will be really good for lower performing kids who don't, can't, won't do worksheets or textbook activities.

:)

As far as I know, not possible on this website. I've been making (SUPER) simple alphabet videos for my 3rd graders which include audio of me saying the letters. As I said, they're very basic because I'm no tech wiz, but I've put the links below. These videos are unlisted so they're only visible with the link.

Additionally here is the *simple* tutorial I made for the card game so my 3rd graders could try at home.

My cot wanted me to make some games using Educandy, but we found out that unless you open it in Chrome it won't work properly. She was opening them in Explorer and for some reason it didn't work before I realized she was using Explorer. So she's going to scrap it because she thinks students will not download Chrome and make excuses to not do the work. 🤦‍♀️

Anyway just be sure to test it out in Chrome (and Explorer) to make sure the games on Educandy is working properly.
