How do get a US$ money order in Korea?
« on: May 18, 2011, 12:39:37 pm »
Does anybody know how I can get a money order for the US in Korea? Does the embassy provide them? Or maybe Korean banks will do them in US$?

I need it for some visa paperwork done in the US (while I'm here in Korea). It's actually for the application to get an appostille on my FBI background check (but it's not for Korea, it's for another country). I have to send it back to the state department for the notarization and appostille with a money order.

Thanks for any help.

I'm not sure about a money order, but I know you can buy a cashiers check in US currency from any of the major banks. It ain't cheap unfortunately. I think I paid around 20,000 for one a while back.

It's kind of a hassle the first time, but keep your paperwork and it will be simple the second time. I do mine thru KB bank, you just go to one of the desks and ask for a "remittance". At this bank you have to bring cash, but there is of course an ATM right there. It costs about $30 to send including bank fees on both ends. I think there may be a cheaper way to do it, but I'm not sure.

You can get a USD money order at KEB or CitiBank (in Busan or Seoul.)

My $82 money order (for extra passport pages) at KEB cost about 95,000 won including the exchange rate and the money order fee.  It was pretty painless.

I have an account at KEB. Do you need to bring in your passport to get a money order?

You can go to any bank and request for a money order (Remittance check =  송금수표).

Information and items you need.
1. Have an account with that bank
2. Have your passport
3. Information of the receiver (name/company name, address, phone number)
4. Your address and phone number in Korea

They will issue you with a bank check.
The process could take about an hour because Korea has been using digital transactions for quite sometime and the bank is not used to issuing money orders (송금수표).
