Why would anyone want to work in a country in which he/she cannot leave, when he/she wants?

People work here for 1 reason only.

Money.

It doesn’t matter if you are a maid or a brain surgeon, high tax free salaries are the only draw.

$2500 does not seem like it would be worth living in that situation...not even $4000.  If you cannot leave job/country when you choose, you are a slave.

Can gay people and apostates apply?

This came up before, about gays anyway. From what I've heard the region is full of Western gay men.  people I know who worked at the BC in Riyadh complained about there being a gay mafia (this was a few years' ago when you could still say that kind of thing)  As for apostates, probably not a good idea.  Strict muslims will just about allow Christians to exist, don't respect aetheists at all, and as we know Apostatsy is a crime.

It seems the majority of beheadings were drug related and China still takes the lead for executions (executing thousands every year, compared to Saudi's 180). If you're dumb enough to try and smuggle drugs into Saudi Arabia, the world would be better off being rid of your stupidity.

Apostasy is punishable by death for Muslims who publicly leave the fold of Islam. They probably wouldn't give a crap if you're an atheists (not unlike the vast majority of the human race), they probably assume most Westerners are Christians or atheists anyway. If you're a Christian, don't pray in public... should be pretty easy as I rarely see Christians on their knees, praying in public. If you're gay, just keep it to yourself.

I've spoken to and know quite a few expats in Saudi, apparently it depends quite a bit on the region you're in. Either way, if going a year or two without alcohol is too difficult, do what the Saudis do; go to Bahrain on weekends and drink yourself silly.

My pros, as a Westerner and a Muslim

- Money seems decent
- I can actually eat the food in any restaurant
- A month off, every year, during Ramadan
- Free Hajj (usually one needs to be on a waiting list for years and it costs an arm and a leg)
- More professional teaching standards (vary by school, but from what i've been told you're actually expected to be and do the
  job of a teacher)
- Plenty of time to work on music practice and every expat I've spoken to has had access to a gym on their compound
- No need to sneak around to pray at work

My cons, as a Westerner and a Muslim

- One of the fattest nations on Earth, so processed crap is served everywhere
- It's hot as hell
- Sharia is BS
- Nothing to do besides shopping and eating
- Close friend worked at women's university in Saudi and said the students are some of the dumbest, rudest, fattest and most
  spoilt brats she ever dealt with.

I'd view it as a place to work, save and get out.

Sounds about right, but it's difficult if not impossible to get accurate figures from China, the figures are a closely guarded state secret. It's also tricky to compare the 2 as they execute for seemingly different reasons.

China executes:

- drug traffickers (only traffickers bringing drugs into China, those manufacturing and smuggling fentanyl to the US are pretty
  much state sponsored)
- political prisoners for organ harvesting
- It's heavily influenced politics and social influence.

Saudi executes for:

- Drug trafficking
- Murder
- Adultery (4 witnesses required to have seen the act of penetration... ugh)
- Witchcraft

Other crimes such as rape, treason, apostasy; Muslims leaving Islam, homosexuality, may invoke the death penalty.

It seems that Saudi Arabia executes for ideological reasons, while China's are motivated by politics. Then there's also the issue of imprisonment. So, where would we, as westerners, be safer? Honestly, I think it's a no-brainer. Depending on the political relationship between China and your country, you might see the police bash your door in and and rile up fake charges against you or not. China is always looking to parade foreign 'criminals' in front of the media. There's also the legalities that a foreigner can never win a case against a mainlander, in China. Even if you stick to all the rules, there's always the risk.

With Saudi, there's no reason to assume anything will happen to you if you obey the law.
