Grade 4 students: can they figure out what is wrong?
« on: June 30, 2020, 01:08:24 pm »
I have a question related to marking homework for grade 4 students.
For each chapter the students are required to write each key word 5x and each key expression 3x.
When I correct the students' homework, I highlight where their error is. For example:
- swimm -> swimm

My co-teacher said that this is not good enough. She said that they might not know what the red markings mean and that I should let them know using her homemade stickers, for example one of them says:
 "Check your spelling 맞춤법을 확인합니다.".

I think the stickers are a waste of time (120+ students) and that grade 4 students are capable of looking at their worksheets and their homework and figuring out what is wrong. I think that it is a good learning exercise.  Do you agree with me?

Couldn't you (in another colour) just write the exact spelling/grammar neatly where the mistake is?

The worksheets have the exact spelling. All they have to do is copy it.

Oh man, I don't even know what to say to that :/

Making stickers sounds like way too much work. Is your Coteacher wanting a personalized sticker for each student?

Maybe students can be notified that different coloured stickers represent a different correction.
ie. red = grammar, blue = spelling, etc.

I totally agree with you that there's no point if they have a worksheet to copy their answers from. Maybe you need to look busier during your free periods (joking).

You could get cheap stamps made for under W10,000. I use them if I have to mark anything on top of correcting in coloured pens.

Wow, these Korean teachers are still brainless.

That activity while simple should encourage the students to engage in 'noticing' and 'error correction' both of which are important aspect of language acquisition.

Are they even trained in language learning?
