Conversation Class
« on: July 15, 2020, 03:35:00 pm »
I was recently asked to teach conversation classes.

As not many students were turning up - we only had an average of one student turn up, I thought I'd get some advice on teaching conversation classes.

Can anyone recommend useful links or resources for topics, games and ideas for conversation classes.

These classes are for elementary 5th Grade students. I may get 4th Grade students joining next week.

They asked me to stop teaching them as the turnout of the students was low. Today I was told it's not specifically a conversation class but more like an after school English Club. So I am free to teach anything really like a song (which I don't normally do) - or anything else.

The best thing I can think of - and which will be easier is to expand on what they are learning in their normal school morning classes.

The English club class can of only be effective if the students show up.

Any help is appreciated! Thanks in advance.

I did an English sentence auction with high school students when I didn't have many students show up and I think it would work for elementary.  You basically give kids some printed money to start out with but with the virus going around, maybe you could just have them write down XX amount of money to start with and have them add/subtract as they go.  Then you show them a sentence and have kids bid on it.  A good sentence is worth a lot of money and a bad sentence is worth nearly nothing.  The goal for students is the bid less money than what they think that sentence is worth and the student with the most money at the end wins.  This got my students talking and you could easily incorporate this into an English club or go off lessons they've already done to come up with sentences.

Hope this helps!
