What do you wish you had expertise in?
« on: July 22, 2020, 09:46:21 am »
I wish I could draw. Cartoons, animated characters and the like. My dad was a fantastic artist in that vein.

Every Christmas he would paint the living room window. A huge scene with Santa and the reindeer flying through the air over some little town. I remember all the neighbours asking when Rog was gonna paint the window. The yard would be packed with parents, kids, and friends when dad started.

The parents would have drinks, sticking beer in the snow to keep it cold. The kids had hot chocolate in thermos'. It was right outta The Saturday Evening Post. Such pleasant memories.

On Halloween me and my sister always went as ghosts. Mom would take a bedsheet and cut holes for eyes and mouth, and dad would cover it with funny Looney Tunes scenes. Everybody always loved our costumes.

I have amazing ideas, much like Gary Larson. But despite trying, and working at it, I just haven't got the gift.

Yeah man, I wish I could draw..........

I wish I could do a Rubik's cube. I don't know if it's a general lack of intelligence, or if my brain just doesn't work that way, but those things are way beyond me.

i wish i could read music/play the piano. i'm competent at bass and i can play guitar well enough, but i do everything by ear or reading the chords. i never really needed to learn to read, so that would be cool. and then playing piano just seems fun, but definitely would need to know how to read. also, to be clear, i do know how to read music, it just takes me much longer (especially reading chords on the staff, yuck) and i truly hate doing sight reading practice

I wish I spoke more languages fluently: Classical Arabic, German, Korean and Xhosa.

I try not to 'wish' for skills, I just learn them, but there's simply not enough hours in the day to take on learning another language.
Aside from posgrad work, my free time is spent training to be a better sprinter, practicing piano/keys and guitar (bass too) and to relax I play video games and boardgames.

Language ability and not having such tone-deafness and horrible singing ability that I make dogs howl.

Practical things in life to date: languages and MECHANICS.

And to facilitate ambitions: sailing and woodworking.

That said, I think I can reduce the list down to languages and sailing and move the other two to a new thread:

****"What experts do you wish you had in your family/friendships?"****

Mechanic and carpenter. Oh, and an expert in computers.

I have zero interest in learning these things but have seen the need for them time and again.

I also wish I could draw. I have plenty of free time and furries are always willing to pay top dollar for commissions

Able to speak every single language known, play the piano, and guitar, and make tons of money from stocks. And athletic skill so I can somehow manage to look like some male model with rock hard 6-pack abs.

Music, languages, Health (for all-around mental and physical longevity)

Health is most important, just knowing how to be in the moment mentally and physically is harder than it seems.  To be able to focus on a task and be content with the present.

Health is most important, ...
In terms of physical health Dr. Greger reviews the peer scientific literature of double-blind, placebo studies, looking at the scientific research every week, on his nonprofit website www.nutritionfacts. org

I have been reading it for over 5 years and it is impressive in detail and rigor, uncovering bias at times, showing limitations of animal-based research, profiling a lot of sound data.
