Job listings that do not list salary
« on: July 29, 2020, 07:37:29 am »
Since any comment about a job posting gets deleted on the actual job thread, I guess we need a different one.

Should potential employers be allowed to post a vacancy with no mention of salary? Isn't that one of the most important things about the position?

I get that this is something that could be discussed at an interview, but am I going to travel 3-4 hours, invest in train tickets, taxi fares, to be told the position is offering 1.9million a month?

There seems to be a general distain for clearly mentioning the pay when listing positions. Why?
Haven't you got some pictures of birds to be jacking off to, son?

Colburnnn: Complains a lot, very sassy. Has a loudmouth.

You know the answer  If the pay was good they'd have no problem mentioning it.

There should at least be a range mentioned

well it's just a big red flag, isn't it. i would never bother applying for a job that doesn't mention salary. you know when they say "negotiable" it's just bullshit and they will lowball you regardless

Yes, also you get crap jobs in all countries so why bother needlessly pointing out salaries of 2.1 being too low and how it's like 2003 again?  Ignore those jobs.  If you're stupid enough to jump in without due diligence then that's on you.  Are we surprised that most hagwons offer crap salaries?  No.  Are we surprised that most hagwons are badly run?  No.  Ignore crap jobs.

while it's true that wages for these kind of jobs haven't gone up for years, the jobs that offer 2.1m are still entry-level jobs that require few/no qualifications. if you are not happy with that wage, get better qualifications

Yeah, no job worth its salt will list a position without at least listing a base pay. And "negotiable" should only be mentioned as a prospect for getting higher than the listed base pay as per your experience and credentials. It should never be used as a replacement for actual numbers, lol.

It's a huge red flag whenever a prospective employer withholds key information like that. Good ones are far too professional to be that vague. If the pay is low, they should just own up to it instead of wasting a bunch of people's time.

A LOT of jobs don’t list their salaries these days. Especially universities. It’s becoming more and more common in the teaching English teaching abroad industry. It’s annoying. Adjusted for inflation, wages in this field are on the decline, generally speaking. Conditions and payment are slowly worsening.

I only got one GCSE and it was an 'E' in History.  And Mrs Matthews said I'd never be a high-flyer.

The biggest game changer would be to have the F visa through marrying a Korean citizen.

The F visa could also be gained via a point system but let's face it, most NETs will never have the Korean language ability necessary to get it this way.

I have responded to job ads that have said salary is "negotiable".

I don't waste my time. I respond with a specific salary I am looking for. I NEVER get a reply to those.

All my hagwon jobs since 2002 have come from specified salaried online job posts.

That's a cop out.  Entry level with inflation for the same jobs and pay would be upper 2's today.  Jobs for experience should be low to mid 3.0's to have same spending power.  Either way, 2.1 is almost minimum wage and using the entry level garbage when 2.9 was paid in today's money 12 years ago.  They were entry level then too.  If the owners have raised their fees since then, they can afford to pass along to teachers.  Salaries may still be a bit below the inflation targets but with reason.  Say 2.5 to 3.0.  I have seen a few Gananam kindies advertise that on some Facebook groups.  Though I am sure they are very picky.

However, if folks quit accepting those jobs and being stupid, then wages would rise quickly.  It's because of stupid people taking them because they don't know math or numbers that a lot of scumbag hogwan owners try to pull this garbage.

Sadly people are not going to stop accepting these jobs and there is no incentive for hagwon owners (even EPIK starts at 2.0) to raise the salary.  Every year they have many more applicants than available positions, with a combination of Koreaboos that will do anything to get here, people wanting to travel and those that are scared of China or the middle east, there is plenty of supply.

That's not even to mention the economic migrants, whilst 2 million may be pittance to an American or Brit, it's much more than a teacher would be paid in South Africa (https://www.payscale.com/research/ZA/Job=Primary_School_Teacher/Salary).

okay but you can complain all day about what the salaries "should" be, but it doesn't mean it'll change anything

I wish there were laws requiring virtually all jobs to provide a base salary.  Obviously, this would be hard for certain jobs, but it would not be hard most of the time.  Governments generally give aid to businesses and weaken unions, but they do not generally do a lot to help laborers unless there is popular pressure or it's in the interest of the business (or government if the state runs the economy).  This applies more or less everywhere.  If you could have an idea of a guaranteed starting salary you could negotiate better.
