Video game recommendations
« on: August 08, 2020, 06:19:48 pm »
I've never really been a fan of FPS games, but I'm looking for something fun to help sharpen my reaction times.

My platforms: PS4, PC, Switch and Mac.

Mac compatible might be a good choice as I take my Macbook to work. They don't necessarily have to be Mac compatible, just something fun and relatively cheap or free.

Doesn't have to be FPS, I might even download some DDR style games or even King of Fighters (was a demon at KOF 2K2 back in the day). Any recommendations at all are welcome.

Cheers

Have you tried the Uncharted series? I just started, and am still playing through the first game, but it's great! Really interesting story and pretty fun combat. Everyone is always banging on about this series and I'm glad I finally got into it

The first game at least is very reflex-focused. I think you'll like it. It's 3rd person by the way, not first person

Dead cheap for the first 3 games (bundle) in the ps4 store, too

FPS?

Bioshock.
The first thing to say is that this is definitely not pyramid selling, OK?

Metro Exodus.

Solid game, good length story mode and the storyline isn't too shabby. One of the last games of the era that will have you devoting an unholy amount of time on it.

I didn't mind Infinite, it just felt like a completely different scenario. Bioshock is underwater......... . That's part of the charm. I liked it but it didn't feel like a sequel. I mean, IT CAN'T BE A SEQUEL. it's a good game but the first one will always have my heart with 2 continuing that love.

I get it, but with Infinite I felt something....I loved the soundtrack, and I felt more invested in the story.

actually, i think you nailed it. infinite put 100% energy into trying to be charming, but ended up with 0% on gameplay, story and fun

No way!  I have to fully disagree...it was charming and it was set in the clouds as opposed to the water.  It felt cartoonish, sure, but it was (for me) a nice story...albeit a total break from the original Bioshocks 1 and 2....I really did enjoy the story and felt immersed.  It felt like I was in a dream the whole time and I loved the experience of it.  To each their own :undecided:

Aristocrat,  which games have you loved?

Pretty varied, but typically, my favourites are RTS/TBS (Dawn of War, Shadow Tactics, C&C, Civilization) and management/builder games (This War of Mine, Frostpunk, Prison Architect). I'll play things like FF7, Last of Us and Ghost's of Tsushima too, if the thematics and gameplay are good.

I think I'll give long story-based games a miss, really not interested in wasting too much time on following a plot.

Ideally, I'd like to pickup something that you can just pickup and play, without any storylines or campaigns. Only reason I don't want to play KOF 2K2 on my Mac is that, that game absolutely destroys keyboards.

There's a game on my Switch which seems like it'll do the job, it's called 10sec run; you have 10sec to complete a maze.
Other than that, plenty of cheap reaction based games on Switch and I can take it to work.

looking to up your reaction times? definitely don't play bioshock (you jabronis). it's a great game but it isn't exactly the most challenging.

if you do wanna eventually try an FPS game... CS:GO is the classic. CoD: Warzone is the trendy one (also free, also like 1000gb). Valorant is the one your students are playing and it's very similar to CS:GO. all of those require great reaction skills or else you'll get bopped.

Starcraft/LoL/Smash/any other non turn-based esport will also challenge your reaction speeds but most not as frequently as the FPS games will (smash and the fighting games are definitely up there with or ahead of the FPS games).

as for more "lightweight" games that are quick to pick up and play... maybe check out osu! it's a rhythm clicking games... it's more useful for getting accurate with a mouse but you might like it/find it useful

What about Touhou/"bullet hell"-type shooters? They'll definitely test your reactions and pattern recognition skills.

As a bonus, the Touhou series is well known for its soundtracks, and there's a burgeoning scene of people doing guitar/metal arrangements & covers of them. Like... entire bands doing full albums of nothing but Touhou songs.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UXkL5YI6GFg

That's all arrangements of themes from three different Touhou games.
