I just finished my man cave in my house. I took an extra bedroom and turned it into my private place. I bought a 43" smart tv, put down some high quality astroturf, bought wallpaper that looks like your standing on a fairway with the green up to the left, 2 sand traps, trees lining the fairway with the ocean and sky in the background. Like Pebble Beach or some of the beautiful courses on PEI or Vancouver Island.

I love golf

I have my fridge, my Lay-Z-Boy chair and I sit back and relax. It looks like I'm on a beautiful golf course.

When I was growing up, every dad I knew had a man cave. It was usually either in the basement or the garage.

My wife doesn't get it and isn't entirely happy about it. She's Asian, a collective society, and she doesn't really understand why I, or anyone for that matter, would want to be alone. My boss doesn't get it either. They, and my family, tend to think I don't want to be around them, maybe I don't like/love them as much anymore. I can see that. But it's not that I don't want to be around them that is the driving force, it's that I need "me" time. Alone time.

Here's a question. Does anyone here desire a man cave? Or woman cave. Most moms when I was young had a sewing room, for example.

Does the younger generation still go for this? How would your Korean wife feel if you took over a room and designated it as your private place? I'm not saying the wife isn't allowed or isn't welcome. Don't read that into it. But it is clearly meant for me, or you, as it were.

My husband and I have a 2-room now, but our plan when we get three (or more? haha) rooms is to have a room for each of us. He'd get a study / office / workout area (which I'd be allowed in to read my books, of course), and I'd get a pet / writing room (we have 2 guinea pigs, but I'm the one who wanted them more, although he likes them too). Our "rooms" are currently combined into a single study / pet room, though.

I don't see a problem with having your own room as long as you don't spend all your time in there. All I ask of my husband is that he tells me when he's going in the study and/or doesn't want to be disturbed, so I know that I have my own time to myself, or can mention something time-sensitive to him ("Ok, but remember, we were going to go out for dinner at 6.").

I don't know if I'm still the "younger generation" though - late 20s.

I live alone (lucky me?) but if I was sharing a house I'd definitely need some me-space.

I like what you say about letting people know that youre going to take time for yourself so that others can too! I know Im very conscious of the people around me and always feel on call if I dont know if Ill be summoned or otherwise disturbed, often causing me to not involve myself in things that might require a substantial amount of time or depth of concentration.

more seriously, idk! my dad didn't really have a man cave, unless the living room counts. i'd definitey like a place to do the things i enjoy, but i don't think those areas need to be cave-like. i guess it'd make more sense to keep a home gym or music room in a separate room, but definitely for reasons other than "i need alone time".

for example, in my current living arrangement, if i want time for myself i just tell my girlfriend "i'm gonna play video games now" and she knows that means i'm gonna be super unresponsive despite being a few feet away. i don't feel the need to put a wall between us (in fact i think i actually prefer having her there)

idk @co2 one of those is a home theater and the other looks like a game room (the other.........) but do those count as man-caves? and @sticky i guess im just not that into interior design and id rather buy something i can use (really though **** that NFL-branded "man cave" couch)

Yeah....LOL...my man cave ain't got nuthin on those others. But like Bugs Bunny said when taking the viewers on a tour of his rabbit hole, "Well, it' ain't the Taj Mahal, but it's mine, and it's paid for."

Most of the time I don't close the door, so I'm not locked away as it were. If I turn the air-con on I close the door but if my wife is in the living room with the air-con on I'll just use the ceiling fan.

BUT......that wooden man-cave would be a dream. That's purty!

I mean if the dude's inviting the broskis over to enjoy some brewskies they can watch 3 whole different sports to avoid any arguments about what games on. I know my family could use at least a second so my brothers would stop fighting over whether to watch college football or basketball every 30 seconds

Admittedly I don't watch TV much but I could do with a couple more monitors. And an actual PC for that matter. For now, a laptop and I-pad sort of suffices

I absolutely could not live without a man cave. I like to smoke
an occasional cigar and drink beer. I can't do this in the house
proper. I also need to get away from my wife's amazingly
annoying Korea reality TV programs.

I used to have a room but we moved from a five bedroom to
a four bedroom. Two of the rooms are classrooms. So, I am
relegated to the balcony. A little chilly in the winter and hot
in the summer. I consider myself lucky because I see other
men of my age having to smoke in the parking lot of our apartment
complex.

News flash: You are not allowed to smoke inside of an apartment building! The others that smoke outside are doing so because they are good citizens and are following the law. Not because they are scared of their wives.

You can't. Welcome to 2020.
Moreover, many places don't allow smoking at all on the entire apartment grounds. People have to go out to the street to smoke. It's not even a new thing. It has been like this for 4-5 years at least.
If you want to confirm, you can ask your apartment management office.
