Time to argue: Who is the greatest athlete?
« on: September 13, 2020, 01:36:23 pm »
Who is, in your opinion, the greatest athlete ever. In my opinion, it's Bobby Orr, NHL. The individual who impacted his or her sport beyond any other.

A legitimate argument can easily be made and defended for Wayne Gretzky.  He has records that will never be broken.

I have had the pleasure of seeing both play many times. I first saw Wayne play in the Quebec City Pee Wee Hockey Tournament. I saw Orr play with the Bruins in the old Montreal Forum several times.

Babe Ruth?
Wilt Chamberlin?
Arnold Palmer? (for his clothing alone!)
Pele?
Billie Jean King?
Willie O’Rhee?
Jesse Owens?

So many greats in so many sports, with many different claims of greatness.

The ones you listed all seem to be greats from way back. E.g. No one talks about Pele being the GOAT any more, nowadays it's usually between Messi or Maradona, Maradona would get my vote having won two serie As with unfashionable Napoli and A World cup and final with mediocre Argie teams.

Surely Michael Jordan trumps Wilt Chamberlain these days and Billie Jean King must have been superseded.

The sports have changed too, though.

Records have fallen, but I don’t think that takes away from the accomplishments of the previous generations.

The OP put Orr ahead of Gretzky. Objectively, Gretzky has more records still standing, but Orr is still ahead in many people’s opinions.

True, football's got easier, in the sense that flair players are protected a lot more now, which is another point for Maradona

Yes but does it count if you give the name to yourself?

Apparantly Paul Ince used to insist his team mates call him 'the guv'nor'.

Oglop's comment was actually one of the only things I understood in this thread, aside from the fact that Lichtenstein lives in the tropics.

Orr? The greatest ATHLETE of all time shouldn't be a short-career injury prone guy. And i love hockey.

Coach Belichick said NY Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor is the greatest football player ever "and it isn't even close".

You're not the greatest athlete if your sport at the time was almost all white and followed by a sliver of the world?

Like, can we at least agree that you should be facing off against the people who disproportionately excel at athletics and sports before being in the conversation? That and have a big chunk of the world play it?

This pretty much leaves the following sports as eligible:
1) Athletics
2) Futbol
3) Basketball
4) Boxing
5) MMA
6) Weightlifting
7) Wrestling

Not qualified and don't even try:
1) Hockey
2) Rugby
3) Cricket
4) Racing
5) Tennis
6) Golf
7) Swimming

There is an exception if they played the above: Did they excel in another sport at the elite level or were they qualified at the national-level in athletics?

Depends on what you mean by greatest, Mr. DeMartino. Is this someone that has a fame and recognition component built-in?

If some lesser known rugby captain led his team to victory every year over 15 years in their national AND international tournaments and he got 7 assists and 3 downs every single game, you could say he was the greatest. He would clearly lead world history in professional titles won. But, yeah, Gerald from rural Idaho wouldn't give a shit.

Gretzky is definitely the greatest hockey player. imo, not the greatest athlete, like in pure athletic skill. Someone that can easily run up mountains, lift massive amounts of weights, not get winded... etc.

For me I'd say Jerry Rice, and I'm not a football fan.
