Phonics Curriculum / Assessments.
« on: September 13, 2020, 06:09:17 pm »
Good Evening fellow teachers. I'm in need of some help. I'm going to be in charge of an after school class for my very low level students. It's going to be based off of phonics and the alphabet. I've gathered a lot of materials; however, I'm just lost as to how to organize it.

I'm going to be teaching them according to the days that they come to school, so somedays it'll be one on one or one on four.

I have:

1 - third grader
2 - fourth graders
4 - fifth graders
1 - sixth grader (I honestly don't know why he signed up because...from my experience from class and summer camp, he just sits there and refuses to do anything. At this point, it's just babysitting.)

I'm planning on doing an assessment for the first day, but I'm not sure which is the best assessment to give? I was just planning on seeing if they can recognize the letters of the alphabet and see how many sounds they know.

Wow, as you can tell from this post, everything in my mind is a mess. Lol please help!

Alphabet is a good start for 3rd & 4th. I used some flash cards I found in my classroom. they were from the text books a few years back so they sort of matched the current lessons. I would look through them and use the ones for what we were learning now. I just had them repeat the words broken down until they could repeat it back. it was boring and hard for them, but they did improve. i suppose you could even use PPT's
I also used writing sheets for the alphabet, just one or two letters per class. but they would write them like 20 times, Aa Bb Cc. i would focus on numbers too, connect the dots and then they can color the picture.
Once they showed improvement I went on to have them write the vocab words from class. we even got up to reading Clifford books! at first i would read the sentence and they would repeat it. eventually one student was able to read on her own .
and my tutoring classes were 40 minutes which is a long time for a kid. so after 20-30 minutes we would play a game together. or they could color or something.
maybe for the 6th grader you could make some word searches for the current lesson. there's a few site that let you create them. or give him a writing worksheet. idk, i have one student who doesn't participate either or when he speaks he uses a silly fake voice.

Thank you so much for the input! As of now, this is a very small group or one to one type and I'm trying to find ways of teaching it to them. I just had class with the third grader and it was difficult, mainly because she doesn't know English and I only know a little bit of Korean. I just had her trace and repeat (low/no reaction) to the Alphabet and phonics. I'm wondering if there are any phonics books that will be easier to incorporate into the curriculum.

sure! I hope it helps. also, on youtube there are some fun ABC videos they might like. channels scratch garden and super simple songs have good ones. I like Alphabet idol. it's cute. play it a few times then practice writing some letters. and the connect the dots for numbers is good too.
kidstv123 looks like it has some phonics but I haven't watched to see if i would use them!
most important try not to stress too much and keep it simple. i'm sure the student is more stressed than you. keep it fun and always praise them. even if it's not great, they're trying so hard.
not sure if you can order or get games, but Candyland is a big hit with my 3rd & 4th graders. it so easy and you can count and work on colors. even if you are doing most of the talking, it's helping.
