Teaching advice and ideas for strange class set up
« on: September 15, 2020, 12:50:22 pm »
Hi, so I'm teaching a 3-6 grade "english care class" which basically means I'm working with grades 3-6 all at once for two hours a day. I'm not really allowed to play games bc of corona and the students levels are so different its impossible to teach a coherent lesson. So I basically give them worksheets to suit their interest and level and tutor them individually with a coteacher. However, the kids are super bored of worksheets (i am too honestly). Ive said screw it and played games but kids always end up leaving early for hagwon etc. essentially ruining the game. They also come in at all scrambled times some coming an hour late, some only coming for 15 minutes, some aren't even students in the class but they come for fun. That was first semester, the second semester, there are only 4 students in the class. But other students surprise me and come as well. What kind of things would you recommend for a chaotic class like this?

Can you do craft activities and snack making, where you dont have to share and make groups etc?

At every level they can learn vocabulary. So I would make a list of topics and then choose 7-8 vocabulary words from the topic to teach each day. As the classes continue, keep reviewing the words and expanding on them. You can make various activities and games for the vocabulary. Start including different sentences as their vocabulary increases and to keep the older kids more attentive.

When I taught after school classes similar to yours, I would choose a topic and have about 3-5 classes on one topic. The students would learn anywhere from 15-30 new words by the last class. Not every students retained everything but most students retained 80-90% of the words. Vocabulary is really important so it helps them in the long run.

Some of my topics included:
space
classroom language
earth
sea animals
land animals
shapes
feathers, scales, claws, teeth
art supplies
music
christmas words
halloween words
costumes
food

Most topics can be made suitable for all grades as long as you have a lot of pictures and make the ppts interesting and fun.

Also just to add another thing, you could teach a couple of story books.
Low level students can fill in the blanks with premade sentences. Basically reading and copying. Higher levels could make their own sentences. Middle levels could do a mix.

Good luck!
