Do most Koreans want foreigners to leave?
« on: September 20, 2020, 06:40:34 am »
I came across this quote from a Korean:

'it's not the minority who doesn't want foreigners in Korea it's the majority.
why should i respect people who attack other countries and kill people just because they don't have the "right" political system, or to steal their resources?'

Is this really the sentiment there now? I am not there but I truly believe this is the ravings of a racist lunatic who is fortunately in the minority in Korea.

Let me know what you think.

The sooner Korea has to look out for itself, the better.

Yes, but is this the sentiment of the majority? Do they want all foreigners to leave? Not just Americans.

I think there those that dont exactly fit it in to either extreme.  I don't think there is anything morally wrong with NOT wanting your country overrun with folks from different tribes.  I feel many Koreans feel that is the case.

but...for a country that has done pretty much nothing except either get its ass kicked or hide under the umbrella of another whilst talking shit to everyone else.....Korea really needs to revaluate its worth.

Racist and extreme nationalistic people want you to leave. Every single country in the world has these people.

The majority of Koreans don’t care about foreigners and just want to live their lives.

Honestly, I don't care whether Koreans want me here or not.

Korea has it's moments of insanity for sure, but nowhere near the clusterf*** that is South Africa. I only hope that I survive the year when I go back to do my PGCE (my wife and child too).

hey, guess what? sometimes when you live in another country, the locals won't always be happy to see you. that's called "being an immigrant". you can't always expect everyone to bend over backwards and go out of their way to make your stay in their country a happy one. unbelievable...the amount of entitlement in this thread

To be honest, I can't see any comment that fits the entitlement label.

I hope this doesn't get derailed into a I hate/love Korea thread. The question is quite straightforward.  Do most Koreans want foreigners to leave?

Bear in mind that foreigners are not just English teacher or US military, many foreigners are employed in industries that are key to Korea' economic survival and prosperity.

Most Koreans don't care, as long as Koreans run the show and make up like 98% of the population.

If visible minorities, emphasis on visible, ever approach 10% then you'll start to see similar issues as in immigrant accepting western countries.

Quote
South Korea, not very tolerant, is an outlier. Although the country is rich, well-educated, peaceful and ethnically homogenous – all trends that appear to coincide with racial tolerance – more than one in three South Koreans said they do not want a neighbor of a different race. This may have to do with Korea's particular view of its own racial-national identity as unique – studied by scholars such as B.R. Myers – and with the influx of Southeast Asian neighbors and the nation's long-held tensions with Japan.

Sounds like the wingnuts running the country under the last Liberal President.  Korean newspapers were awash with "fake news" about English teachers too.  We all had AIDS, fake diploma, were all pedos, and immoral for wanting to date Korean women.  Japan and America were the enemy, not nearby Communist countries.  Some of them are working for the new one too, but are less open and explicit about it.  Most of the population is cool with us, I think nowadays.  A lot has changed in the country from even the 2000's decade.

I was trying to figure out your motivation for starting this thread with a quote that you obviously know is not true.  It's like reading "Your mama is a whore" in a bathroom stall and then going back out and asking the people if it's true that their mamas are really whores.  Then I figured it out.  And since it was such a beautiful weekend and I'm feeling refreshed and happy on a Monday morning I thought I'd indulge you.

Dear ConfusedSafferinTai wan,

Yes, it's true.  The large majority of Koreans do not want foreigners in the country anymore.  Coincidentally, there was a sea change in sentiment right around the time you had to leave Korea.  Where before people had either been indifferent or hospitable, they had become downright hostile.  Even my normally friendly neighbours began leaving their garbage outside my door then making complaints that I was leaving garbage in the hallway.  A movement was begun to replace foreign factory workers with resentful, yet higher paid Korean workers.  The president has promised to get rid of the U.S. military presence and turn their former bases into peace parks.  It's just really not comfortable being here anymore in the current anti-foreigner climate.  I know you don't like to point this out but I think you really landed on your feet in Taiwan.  You are really, really fortunate and I think I speak for most people here when I admit I'm envious.

All the best,

OnNut81
