signing up for kakaopay
« on: October 20, 2020, 02:32:12 pm »
is it pretty easy / straightforward, and can foreigners do it yet?
Has anyone else here signed up for it? :O
I've been looking into this cause, the security app for my korean credit card doesn't work for me, and I need an alternate payment method for the times when the extra security pops up.
But, I've read conflicting info about if foreigners can yet sign up for it or not. :o

I can't remember when exactly I signed up, several years since then I reckon. It was fairly easy as well. Couldn't live here without it tbh.

Signing up for KakaoPay is not that difficult....though it may be a little confusing sometimes. I recently signed up for the kakaopay card because I read that there is a good about of cash back for a time....it's just connected to your already existing bank account

Foreigners can absolutely sign up for KakaoPay. As far as I know, it's KakaoBank which is not available to foreigners.
Alternatively I find Payco and Naverpay both very useful.

Yeah it's really easy to set up and use. I started using it last year and used this guide to set it up: https://rosokoblog.wordpress.com/2018/10/12/howtosetupkakaopayp1/

Like nightninja said you can also get cash back everytime you pay for something and you can sign up for a card that works like a regular visa or mastercard at stores that gives you cash back for every purchase but only maybe 10 to 40 won most times.

Easy to set-up and use but there's no English. I will say if you're experiencing issues check that your ARC name matches the name on your bank account. My bank account was listed first - middle - last unlike the ARC so I had to stop in the bank and ask them to change the name on my account to match the ARC EXACTLY (last - first - middle, all caps). From there you're eligible, and no, you don't need KakaoBank. Any Korean bank account is fine (I use Hana). You'll just need to link it to your Kakao account via the app and it works much like a bank transfer without all the little steps in-between.

NaverPay is also great but I find a lot of Korean friends don't use it. KakaoPay has been great for me much like Venmo in the states (if you're American) to split bills and send friends money, etc. NaverPay is great if you actually shop on Naver. Otherwise it's really not useful in my experience, but everyone is different.

If you don't know any Korean and don't feel like you can muscle your way through with a translator, get a friend of coworker to help you.

Cheers for all the responses, and the link to set it up.

My bank is fine though, when I got my credit card, I installed the app and the lady was going to set it up for me, but it didn't end up working, even though she had all the info in front of her.
She couldn't understand why it wasn't either. After about 40 mins, she said to come back the next day, as there might be a 24 hour wait or something. I went back the next 2 days and still nothing, so just gave up on the app haha.

The KakaoPay app? I just set it up through KakaoTalk app from the menu. In my case there was a popup after entering all the information that my ID didn't match so make sure your name in your bankbook 통장 is exactly the same as your ARC. Same goes for NaverPay - you need your Naver account name to match exactly to your ARC as well. I don't use the KakaoPay app.. just KakaoTalk so I can't tell you if it's any different.

No, the security app for my korean credit card.
I haven't set the kakaopay app up yet. I'll probably do it today sometime, or at least attempt it. :p

Side question, what can I use KakaoPay with? I set it up a while back and I'd like to use it more often than the inconvenient access key system my bank uses...

You can use Kakaopay for sending and receiving money to/from friends as mentioned above.
Some websites have a checkout option for Kakaopay/Naverpay/Payco which saves you from creating a membership for the websites - for example you can check out on the Uniqlo website using Naverpay - then you don't have to enter your address every time you check out because it can link to your Naver account address book.
You can link Kakaopay to other apps, like Yogiyo has Payco/Kakao/Naverpay among its payment options.

Basically it's just going to make things a lot faster and more convenient for you.
