Memories.....
« on: November 05, 2020, 12:06:38 pm »
Tell a memory from your childhood. Not sure why this came into my mind this morning. Probably reflecting on the circus in the USA, the world in general and turning 60 soon.

It was 1967 and Canada was turning 100 years old. Bobby Gimby wrote the Canada song which united us with such joy and hope. We were a nation of happy people, safe, secure with nothing but rainbows in the skies from coast to coast. I was 6 and Bobby Gimby came to our school and played his song while we sang at the tops of our lungs and followed him around the park.

When I was around 5 years old, I tied a bunch of sheets together and used them to climb out the second floor window for fun. When I got down, I was locked outside and neighbors had to call my Mom to let me back in.  I think I literally saw steam coming out of my Moms ears that day.

You truly are the quintessential Zoomer

Personally I remember having to watch Beverly Hills Chihuahua like 30 times because we had family movie nights and my younger brother was obsessed with it. Still have one of the songs stuck in my head

When I was in Elementary School the white community (during the horrific Apartheid era) was divided into two groups - the Boere, (Dutch bloodline) and the Rooinekke (British bloodline) and we were mortal enemies. Anyway, we lived near a river and the banks were largely clay and we used to cut quince sticks which are whippy like willows and put a blob of clay on the end and then use that to launch your clay missile at your enemy. We re-enacted the Anglo-Boer War  ;D

If you got hit, it really hurt and inevitably you had to advance through the muddy river to defeat your enemy and as a result you go pretty wet and dirty. That was all great fun but the problem was when I went home all dirty, the stinging from the clay missiles was nothing compared to the stinging on my butt when my mom was finished with me. Somehow, despite the pain of the missiles and the beating we got at home, the next week it was business as usual with the Rooinekke determined to destroy those barefooted Boere (they never seemed to wear shoes, even when they played rugby against us, they didn't wear boots and kicked the ball barefooted, we were awe struck).

I remember leaping off the roof of our old chicken coup with an umbrella when I was about 6. I expected to float down. Never did that again.

I was drinking out of a glass Coke bottle and my brother
rode by on his bike and smashed it into my mouth breaking
off my front teeth.

I got him back by climbing on the roof and removing a brick from
the chimney. I called his name and when he looked up I dropped
it on his head causing a large number of stitches.

Good times.

My 6pm class was suddenly canceled (well, I was suddenly told last minute) due to third-year middle school tests.

So,... i bring up memories of a class that i suddenly missed and a lass that I didn't.

In the last year of high school my best friend and I took a study hall break class because we had 3 science and 2 math classes among our 7, and one didn't need an 8th (or could fail it, i guess). The principal oversaw the class and we always were quiet and hard working when he came. One day the vice-principal informed us the P couldn't come and we were to study on our own in the classroom. Riiiigghht. It was April, 20+ C outside and sunny, and it happened to be our last class of the day that Thursday, so we bailed and went to the park, threw around a football, and I met a girl there, dating her a year and a half later when i saw her in college and remembered her name, walking up to say hi. We then dated for 13 months.  I remember I was glad the principal was absent and my bud and I decided to take off; and thinking that if it had been rainy we would have waited for the bus; we certainly wouldn't have gone to the park!

So many experiences in life are due to happenstance.

One year, my parents got us a kiddie pool, one of those non-inflatable but foldable pools meant for bigger kids. If you filled it to the top, a child could definitely swim around in it, not just wade.

Anyway, one day I had a dream that I could breathe underwater. In the dream, I had spent the entire day in the kiddie pool just kind of taking in how strange it felt to breathe underwater and how clearly I could see everything, and then wondering if I should tell anyone about it.

Now all of this had been incredibly real to me, it was the very first hyper vivid dream I'd ever had, and I was only, like, 4 or 5 at the time, so when I woke up and went through the rest of my week, I ended up honestly believing that the dream had been a real experience. It was like a memory.

So of course the very first thing I did once I had a chance to swim around in the pool again was to take a big breath while underwater. I shot out of that pool so fast just snorting and coughing and doing the best I could to breathe without pain again. My mom had come rushing over to me in a panic because she'd thought I'd somehow managed to swallow something and was choking on it. When she found out what was really going on, she nearly disowned me because no child of hers could be so ****** dumb.

Sibling combat!

I remember wrestling with my younger (by ~2 years) brother. He is more athletic than me, so we were always pretty evenly matched.

One time, he pinned me on my back, so I kicked up my legs, grabbed his head between my feet, an smacked his head down on the concrete basement floor.

He got up, yelling “My teeth! My teeth!” - but it sounded more like “teef”.

No sign of permanent damage, and he did not lose any “teef”.

Good times!

That’s a disgusting story. You could have killed him and very well may have unknowingly caused permanent brain damage.

Yeah, some of these memories remind me of scenes out of 'The Wasp factory' which was the equivalent of 'Catcher in the Rye'  for a certain generation.

Quote
“Two years after I killed Blyth I murdered my young brother Paul, for quite different reasons than I'd disposed of Blyth, and then a year after that I did for my young cousin Esmerelda, more or less on a whim. That's my score to date. I haven't killed anybody for years, and don't intend to ever again. It was just a stage I was going through.”

Look. If someone tells you a MEMORY of something they did A LONG TIME AGO, don't automatically judge them.

There is a reason why there's a limit on the length of time most offenses can press charges.

If it ain't murder, cut pre-2010 (heck here we are talking 1990's and 1980's incidents) some slack.

Let memories flow.... truly... openly...

My older brother once distracted me during breakfast and stole the prize from the Shreddies box that was rightfully mine.  Later at the bus stop I strapped a rocket I had ordered from the Acme Rocket Company to his backpack.  As the bus approached I lit the rocket and rubbed my hands in gleeful revenge.  Unfortunately, the Acme company's offerings had become so diverse they had spread their expertise too thin.  Instead of boosting my brother off into the horizon it exploded.  No one ever specifically said they blamed me, but I still feel bad.  Until now, that is.  Whew, that was a load off.  Friday!

I sort of agree and see your point ... but he said ‘Good times’ at the end. ‘Bad times’ (something to regret) would be more appropriate. Seems psychopathic otherwise.

There is also an age of criminal responsibility. Most places,  a 9 year old cannot bred criminally charged.
