I'd guess he made the comment based on this

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wog

"Wog is a slang word in the idiom of Australian English and British English. It is usually employed as an ethnic or racial slur, and considered derogatory and offensive."

Cf. niggardly

"Niggardly" predates the ethnic slur, and has an entirely different etymology.

That said, I probably wouldn't use that word in the USA.

So yeah, pretty similar to "Polliwog".

There are a lot of words and expressions out there like that. Call them collateral damage to the ever evolving (devolving?) nature of offensive language, I guess.

'Whiter than white.'

And people say there is no cancel culture.

What people? Which ones?

I know who is decrying "cancel culture": the Maga-hat crown who are now turning off Fox News since it dared tell the truth, and are turning to OANN or Newsmax.

I seem to remember Howard Cosell using the word niggardly - which means cheap or stingy and has no racist leanings whatsoever unless purposefully manufactured - and then refusing to apologize for people's lack of vocabulary.

Any sports fans out there? Not soccer or cricket, real sports. Do yourself a favour and read "I Never Played the Game" by Cosell. It's a fascinating look into the background of NFL and boxing from a very intelligent man.

James O'Brien for example (LBC radio host) whose attitude is fairly typical of the media in the UK. In this debate, he denies cancel culture exists except for a few isolated cases connected to Trans Rights. Morgan's examples are pretty feeble which doesn't help.
