Tadpole or Pollywog
« on: November 25, 2020, 02:46:03 pm »
A silly and otherwise useless Wednesday musing.

I'm teaching about the lifecycle of the frog in science class. The book says egg-tadpole-froglet-frog

I thought, tadpole??? What the heck is that?

Anyone else call them pollywogs?

That’s not how we learned it in sailing school — this coming from a seasoned shellback.

Only ever heard “pollywog” in children’s songs or books.

I've only used the term 'tadpole' but have heard of pollywogs so would know what they were.  I'm from British backdrop - does that make a difference?

Interesting.  Stephen Fry once brought up pollywog on QI and none of the guests knew it.  He said it was an Americanism.  As an American, I had heard the term, but tadpole was how I knew them.
Mr. C is not a bad person, in fact is quite a good person here. One of the best people on this forum if you really look at it

I've heard the name but I imagine it's not very PC these days.

Displaying my:

A) Lack of PC culture

or

B) Lack of "apparently" racist thoughts

But why would pollywog not be PC? Seriously, I don't know.

I'd guess he made the comment based on this

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wog

"Wog is a slang word in the idiom of Australian English and British English. It is usually employed as an ethnic or racial slur, and considered derogatory and offensive."

It also rhymes with 'gollywog' which is bound to trigger somebody

Hardly appropriate for polite company!

As an American, I'm ashamed my kind has come up with a term that sounds like something more befitting the Commonwealthers in its absurdity and impracticality.

Well, that's a step up from "hardly appropriate for *any* company." which is what I used to get all the time.

Just for interest's sake, baby salamanders, toads, caecilians, and newts are also called tadpoles (or polliwogs, or pollywogs)

Thinking back - I wonder if the Pokemon: Poliwag, Poliwhirl, Poliwrath, and Politoed are named based on the word "pollywog" haha
