Talk me out of moving to Saskatchewan.
« on: December 07, 2020, 07:23:20 am »
I grew up in B.C., went to uni and worked in Alberta, Manitoba and Ontario.

(Was delusioned about Vancouver. Will consider Victoria as the default option.)

Regina looks affordable and different enough to pique my interest. Or,.... Montreal?

If you have info on a cool Mexican locale or the like then spill the chili. Us Canucks can only stay 6 months in Mexico though, 6 months in the U.S.; i ain't against border hoppin'!

Saskatchewan or the Maritimes would have a cheaper living cost.  (Northern Ontario, too.)  Sask would be better for jobs?

Other than a brief mention of Regina it doesn't sound like you have any interest in moving to Saskatchewan.  Seem much more interested in Mexico.  I could certainly see myself living in Montreal.  Toronto is my go to, but I like Montreal.  Zero interest in living outside of those two places, though.  When it comes to Canada I know what parts of the country I could do long term.  Maybe Calgary.  But in B.C. you would have to put up with people from B.C.  They always seem to have this misplaced attitude that they're chilled and hip and the rest of Canada envies them.  The first time I went to Vancouver I was amazed they still had punks with mohawks on the street and how dull the place was.  Outside of the city that was East Hastings at least.  Never seen a street like that in Canada.  I grew up in Toronto, went to school in Montreal and I was totally unprepared for how dumpy and slummy that part of Vancouver was.  And I know it's only gotten worse.  This was in the nineties.

But aren't these places expensive to live?  (Unless you already have property there.)

Saskatchewan is probably one of the least preferred places
to live in Canada. Unless your a farmer it has very little to
offer. No mountains, no ocean, no culture, no cuisine, no
multicultural vibrancy, no nice climate.  It is difficult to think
of a less attractive Canadian location.

Montreal is much more affordable than Toronto for rent.  But, he never mentioned that being able to afford to live there was his main criteria.  If that's the case, and you need to go back to Canada then by all means, move to somewhere in the boonies.  I need a a real city, though.  It all depends on your criteria.  After working here for years I wouldn't be able to go back and buy a house in a part of Toronto I wanted to live in, but I wouldn't have any problem renting and then looking for work.  I think because I went back to Montreal for the first time in 17 years a couple of summers ago and enjoyed it so much, that that would be a good place to first go back to.  Just rent a place and adjust back to Canada.  Worry about work later.

Anyways, I hope that helps in regards to Saskatchewan.

I am a B.C. Lions fan by birth. But I have LOVED the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Ray Elgaard defined the SLOTBACK position. It's too bad the NFL refuses to acknowledge the position exists, despite the success of an "inside" receiver like Golden Tate.

There are still a lot of places I need to visit in Canada, but Saskatchewan and Manitoba are two places that have never held any interest to me whatsoever.  I can't think of anything they have to offer that isn't available in some more interesting part of the country.  I drove across the top of the U.S. back in university to go tree planting in B.C. (cheaper gas) so I have the wide open plains thing covered.

I grew up in the prairies, and I finished high school in Saskatchewan. Although the province gets dismissed often by other Canadians, its a good place to put down roots for the right person.
Regina is really flat and not that attractive, I would recommend Saskatoon as it has a really nice riverbank, plenty of biking trails, and is much more picturesque than Regina.
People in Saskatchewan are friendly, and are down to earth and real, unlike people in Toronto, many of which want to be Americans.
Everything you hear about the weather is true..its a dry cold, and can easily be -25 on a winter day. We had to plug in our cars in winter at that time so they would start in the morning.

Saskatchewan is a great place to raise a family, for a single person, not as much. You've been in Jeju for so long, that you're probably so used to having water around you. It might seem dull to you, so I can't recommend the province to you personally.

Like 70% of Albertans are no more than one generation removed from Saskatchewan.

Mind elaborating on that one?
The first thing to say is that this is definitely not pyramid selling, OK?

Torontonians desperately want to be accepted by Americans. They look down on other Canadian cities while comparing themselves to "New York". They won't support the CFL because its Canadian. Many have not been west of Sudbury in their entire lives. It's no surprise that Toronto is so despised by the rest of Canada.

a) I find that other cities all shit on Toronto while people in TO rarely think of them at all.
b) Football is not popular, generally, in Canada.
c) I've been to Elliot Lake and seen nothing between that and Calgary.
d) "It's no surprise that Toronto is so despised by the rest of Canada." Yup, like I said in a) most Torontonians aren't wringing their hands worrying about what people in Sarnia are doing.

Toronto once had a hard-on for the NFL back when they were flirting with the Bills.

Canadians have a love-hate thing with Toronto. Kind of like with Americans with either New York, or California.

We'll shit on Toronto, unless there is only one Canadian team left in the hunt for some sports trophy.

I had a friend from Nova Scotia who spent a summer in the GTA.  When he came back, he said it was like an extension of the US.  Highways criss crossing everywhere, large crowds, power lines and traffic everywhere, even in the countryside.  This was almost 20 years ago mind you.

No, Toronto didn't.  Some prominent business people misread the interest in the NFL as people willing to do whatever it took to get a home team.  Ted Rogers spent all that money so Toronto could host some Bill's games.  There was a huge build up and the rest is history.  There simply wasn't the fan interest.  The Argos are still around and The Bills debacle is over.  Would a Toronto NFL franchise actually do well in Toronto?  Probably, but not at the price they were asking.  They thought it was a shoo in.  It was not.

It's a well-marketed league and people all over Canada follow it.  Montrealers would love an NFL franchise.  Liking the NFL is not a Toronto centric thing, but where else would be considered a contender city in Canada?
