Your mos eisley cantina in Korea?
« on: December 26, 2020, 10:28:27 am »
What fine establishment is your mos eisley cantina in Korea?

I thought about this, Seoul Pub, Old Town and The Grand Ole Opry were high on the list but mine is a CU location in Busan facing the red light district.

The Magpie in Hongdae WAS, until the building owners kicked them out to renovate everything.

Then it was the 711 near the Starbucks in Beomgye.

Now it's red wine at home. :(
The first thing to say is that this is definitely not pyramid selling, OK?

Twenty years ago, it was 'The Cavern', by Cheongju University. It closed about 2003/4. Best vinyl selection I've ever come across.
I haven't been to the pub for 8 years or so. Like CO2, my go to place is home.

Seoul Pub - Itaewon
3 Alley - Itaewon
Woodstock - Sinchon
Nashville Club - Itaewon (1996)

There was a bar in the Russian district of Busan I frequented 2002-2006 when I lived an hour away. I witnessed two fights after which there were rounds of free drinks (wouldn't that encourage bad behavior?). Lots of smoking, laughing, card games even, the music English and Russian. It closed down in '06. I can't recall the name. The front door had a long brown handle with a silver plate behind it. No windows. It was across the street from the import shoe store.

Nashville Sports Pub in Itaewon was my go to place when I first started going up there back in 1997.

my favourite place used to be Exit Bar in hongdae. CO2 mentioned Magpie, and Exit Bar was in the same place before Magpie.

man, that place was great. hanging around in hongdae park was generally great back then, too

Geeze.  I thought I was here for a long time.  Wow!  Some of you folks really have me beat.  (You must have been on Dave's back in the day.)  Sadly, I got here just towards the end of the golden age.  Though I am glad I got to experience a slight touch of it.

I liked the Rocky Mountain  Tavern. There was also a place very close that had an amazing vinyl collection and a very cool guy running it.

91-97 it was The Golden Gate located on the hill. Unfortunately that Korea doesn’t exist any longer

Wow, someone who has been here longer than me.  Which hill are
you referring to? Hooker or Homo.

Back in '96 Korea was pretty rough around the edges. It must have
been even more so in '91. (Although a great time to make and save
money. I remember interest rates being like 16~17% and the exchange
rate being about 650won to the dollar.

And, teachers made more back then. 2.5-3.0M was normal.
