"Old man strength"
« on: January 08, 2021, 11:24:38 am »
I did not understand it.

Yeah, I have seen an 83-year-old put down a 40-year-old man like a rag doll.

I have seen my 72-year-old dad put down two drunk 30-odd-year-old guys (who were kicking an unconscious guy outside a bar).

But now, I at age 51, have no problem pulling a wine cork straight out after my pansy *** had to use those leverage winged cork screws a decade ago. Heck, in my teens and twenties I benched my weight (180-185 lbs.) but couldn't pull a damn cork straight out of a wine bottle!

Old man strength. I suddenly have it. I dunno what this phenomenom is. But there is something to it.

Strength and the ability to fight with proficiency aren't the same thing. The ability to fight is a skill. Yes, a skill that can be augmented with strength, but first and foremost, a skill. Drunk guys? No disrespect to your dad, but getting the best of someone who's vision, judgement and coordination are severely impaired isn't a testament to one's fighting prowess.

The rate at which you can get stronger through training is greater than the rate that age will reduce your strength. That's all I can really say about your example as I've never tried to pull a cork from a bottle.

I'd bet all of the above probably has more to do with improved technique than anything else, lol. You just learn better about how and where to apply force.

Your strength doesn’t decline as fast as your conditioning does, but it certainly doesn’t increase.

What does increase is self confidence and decision making.
