Musical Pursuit 2021 Spring
« on: January 27, 2021, 02:36:20 pm »
Hello
The students really love the musical pursuit games, they've played all the previous versions and since they wanted to do one more during the break, I edited a new one. Changed the first category to TROT though.
Kept only 2 songs from the previous 2020 version because they were too good.
Anyways, hope you enjoy!

Don't know the original creator of the game but it has evolved so much, took me all week to edit this.

PS. Updated to remove the more "obscure songs" and replaced with a few better known ones.

TROT is a challenge , I give them 5 points if they know either the singer or song.
Watch and Words are 1 point.
For the Kpop and Listen, I give them 1 point if they get the singer, and 1 point for the song - 2 points if they got both.

Hi there,

Just wanted to say thank you so much for editing this, and making a new version. Really appreciate it. I played the original version with my 6th graders last week (already finished the textbook a while ago), and they loved it, so when I saw a new version I was really happy because I knew they'd want to play it again. For the most part the game went well, however I just wanted to mention the one issue I ran into.

For both the "K-pop" and "Listen" section, pretty much all groups got none of the answers right for any of them. Even when I showed them the answers, the reaction was "who?" instead of "oh, right".

I know nothing about K-pop so I quickly googled all the songs from those two sections and I found that, with a couple of exceptions (BTS, Itzy) all the songs in those sections date back to somewhere between 2014 and 2017, with a couple songs even going as far back as 2010/2011.

My experiences with elementary school students is that, when it comes to K-pop, anything older than a year is ancient history. I've occasionally made the mistake of reusing a ppt from a previous year that included all the "hot" groups from that moment in time, but a year later kids were blinking at these "strangers" like they'd never seen them before.

A song from 2015, for a sixth grader, is a song from when they were in 1st grade. Given the disposable nature of the genre, I'm gonna try updating those sections with hits from 2020 and see what happens with other classes.

For the Trot section, none of the groups were able to answer any of the questions that were selected, but they did at least seem to recognise the answers. Maybe you chose some classics that have endured through the ages for those questions?

Has anyone else tried using this version with elementary school kids? Have you had similar experiences? Am I being an idiot, and this is clearly meant for middle school students?

Please let me know. I hope I'm not coming across as having a go at the creator. I appreciate your efforts, I'm just trying to give honest feedback.

Hello! The trot ones are a little bit of a challenge! I give them 5 points for it, some of the kids know it, I chose the most popular trot songs. However if you find there is a song that no one knows then you can change it.

The kpop songs are meant to be somewhat of  a challenge, some of them know it and some of them don't.  But overall the class has lots of fun :)

Love this! Thanks for making it, it must've taken ages. Everything works great except in both versions all the listen slides say media unavailable. I don't know if it's only doing this on my downloads for some reason. Just curious if anyone else had the same problem.

*Edit* I opened the ppt on my work pc and the music works now. I guess that type of file just doesn't work well on mac?

Hey, I haven't tried this particular version yet, but I'm anticipating the same issue. I'm planning on adding current songs. Like you said, in no way is this a slam to the creator; this game is AMAZING. But with certain elementary kids the older songs are not as applicable. I want to try the trot section as is though, even if they don't know all the answers. I feel like some kids will know.
