I have two, one does Tai Chi almost the whole day, not sure when he has classes because he is always at it outside my classroom. He is usually drenched in sweat and then hangs his sweaty clothes out to dry on the back of a chair outside my classroom too.

The other is one that dresses most weirdly and brings an array of remote controlled cars to school and spends his free time trying to get the 4x4 to climb tree trunks and his truck to carry rocks around.

Man, it's weird.

A teacher and staff member at my school, both related to driving.

The drive from her home to our school takes about 20min. She leaves super early because it takes her about 90min to get to school. She's had her license for about 2yrs, but is still incredibly nervous behind the wheel and drives slower than most people walk. She'll only park in one specific parking spot, which the other teachers leave open for her, because she doesn't know how to park in any other spot.

The other has had her license for over a year, but refuses to drive. It takes 2hrs for her to get to school using 3 buses.

I believe one is in her late 20s and the other is in her mid 30s.

Does it count that my CT is eccentric in her banality. Her interests are eating, watching soap operas and chatting to her friends. The only conversational topic she's interested in talking or hearing about is gossip, good classroom management skills though.

some people just really hate driving.....just like some people really hate snakes or heights....its just a fear

Nothing eccentric about that here. It's conventional and common among Korean women.

Now, if that person was at an artist retreat, then it'd be eccentric.

Apparently theres a crazy lady at one if my travel schools. She has to change schools every year. I havent met her yet because she is on extended sick leave, I dont know why but it isnt a physical issue. I understand korea is still in the dark ages in terms of mental health but this seems really extreme.

There is a teacher at my hagwon who ...

always pokes out and throws in the garbage the ham and egg in their kimbap,

air high fives and elbow shakes students in the hall (none of the other teachers do that),

wears canvas shoes with dress pants,

and

opens all the windows wide, even on rainy days!

Damn, where to start.

Teacher 1

The freak. This guy was really lanky and self-conscious and would NEVER eat Korean
food. He was so uneasy around people the students would complain.
He left early because he hated Korea so much and was losing a dangerous
amount of weight.

Teacher 2

The heroin addict, from New Zealand. No degree. Didn't need a real one
prior to swirly-face guy. Was an extremely dangerous character. He
used to get into bar fights and wouldn't stop until he was stomping on the
other guys bloody head.

Teacher 3

The inmate. Ex construction worker from Canada. Also no degree and probably
no high school either. Students complained of his lack of basic English
grammar. Ended up going to prison for drug dealing on Vancouver Island.

Teacher 4

The grow-op. This guy worked here for about seven years only on a
tourist visa. Had a grow-op in a cupboard in his apartment. He made some
serious weed. He was from Vancouver, obviously.

Teacher 5

The drill sergeant. This egregious female's dad was a general in the US Army.
The school let her go because she would beat up her room mates and then
try and seduce other female teachers when drunk.

Teacher 6

The stuffed animal. This guy would carry around a huge stuffed animal
anywhere he went. School, bars, trips. He didn't last long.

Teacher 7

The Rastaman. This guy thought he was so cool. Had dreadlocks and
some hot GFs. Then he got caught with 500g of hash. Did six months
in the slammer and then was deported. He was lucky he was American
or he would have done a lot longer.

There were lots of other weird characters.

Surprisingly common here more than you'd think. But those people are incredibly annoying to get stuck driving behind. Hence the frustration amongst other drivers who end up passing them and driving more aggressively as a result. I usually encounter the aggressive too fast drivers and the too slow and too timid drivers. Both of these extremes cause accidents. Just drive normal with the flow of traffic. If the speed limit is 60, drive 60 or even 70 - not 30 or 100 km/hr. When the light turns green, go,instead of sitting there for 2 minutes wiating to very slowly get driving causing a whle of cars behind you to miss the light. Selfishness. Not to mention lots more car emissions due to all this dilly dallying.

I guess I get use to it. But really annoyed me to the point of yelling out the window for a couple of years or more. The too aggressive drivers also annoying. One or two yelled at me for driving normal and I rolled down the window and yelled back at them. Those ajossis were shocked. But I took none of their shit.

Korea makes you a more aggressive and assertive person than you would be in the west. Hinting and politeness here gets you treated like a doormat. Though thankfully, those old ajummas don't butt in the line in front of you anymore. Maybe that stopped about 10 years ago? I remember I had to start being rude to cut them off and stop them from cutting in the line in front of me and others.

Does anyone remember that video of an ajumma who ran down the wedding isle and cut in front of the walking bride, pushing her back, in an attempt to get to her seat asap?

It was stunningly unbelievable, yet totally consistent with local non-street culture.

The video went viral and then suddenly disappeared. It was about 6 or 7 years ago.

If you work at a hagwon, I think the more appropriate question is there are any teachers at your school who aren't eccentric.
