Half-ass U? Where the women are women and the men are too. I like a good circus as much as E.B. White, but I wouldn't go to a university to learn how to be a clown.

The GatorNation is everywhere.

Florida:
Too damned many to name, really. Let's not forget that a day without a glass of Florida orange juice is like a day without sunshine.

Fried shrimp and steamed oysters
The Swamp
All the places I used to drink and eat at that are no longer there.

Seoul:
the subway system
huge department stores
Lotte buffet

Cape Town

- More world class surf spots within driving distance than most other places on Earth
- Staggeringly beautiful scenery, weather and clean air
- Best seafood

SA for all its problems is still one awesome place. Seafood is great there but in my books Cape-Malay food is hard to beat.

Met a lot of you folks over here always telling me about Cape Town and table mountain.  Got around to spending an afternoon doing the google maps street view thingee.  While not the same as being there in person, I gotta say, you got some damn nice scenery there.  I am going to visit the Cape one day.

SA is dangerous and so is CT, but if you're travelling in a car, staying away from the flats and other no-go areas (nothing to see there anyway) and have basic awareness of your surroundings you'll be perfectly safe. The city has done a lot to beef up security in the CBD, hiking/mountain trails, beaches and other tourist spots.

No need to leave CT unless you're going on a Safari.

When I lived in Phuket the used book places always seemed to have a lot of Wilbur Smith books that extolled the beauty of South Africa, especially Cape Town.  Had a roommate from a place called Durban when I lived in Taiwan years ago and she said it was nicer than Cape Town.  All I know is if I go and visit there I want to get this guy as my tour guide.

Stay out of anywhere in Africa unless you have a:

-deathwish
-a huge life insurance policy you want your family to have
-a will you want prosecuted

What absolute horse manure.  Africa has plenty of very peaceful countries, Botswana, Namibia and Zambia to mention but a few.

I have been living in Cairo, Egypt (Africa!) since November, so here it goes:

1) very low cost of living
2) lots of vacation destinations without needing to leave the country.
3) friendly people

Also, you have to be careful with some of the crime stats. For example, violent crime might be confined to 1-2 very specific neighborhoods that everyone knows to stay out of, with the rest just subject to, at worst, the usual "tourist trap" crime of scams at some street market or pickpocketing. This can give a distorted view of how dangerous it is to travel, with an inflated murder rate. Or you might have one single bad incident that artificially inflates the homicide rate as well (i.e. boat sinking declared a homicide because of negligence), especially in countries that have lower populations.

Wait, I forgot to mention the random, cross border killing sprees of
Boko Haram.  They will pop up unexpectedly and lop off the heads
of anyone looking a bit "iffy".

Oh right, I forgot Boko Haram has infiltrated every single country and city in Africa.  Mmmmm, maybe not.

It's okay SPQR Africa can do without all the millions of $ you would have spent there. By the way I forgot to mention, Africa is not for sissies.

So, confusedlolfer, you're all for defending the nuanced reality of Africa (right on btw, I agree), but you come out with these awfully boring drony 1-dimensional screeds about China because blah blah CCP wah wah cancer boo hoo like it or not one of the notable transformations of our time. You're close to being the lolgook77 of Africa.

Chimp, what are you on about? Oh, you must be a CCP supporter. Anyhoo, this is about Africa, not China so I am not sure why you brought up China.
