This is total conjecture, but maybe Japan attracts a lot of weebs who aren't the most social people.

I honestly felt the opposite way when I lived in Japan.
I made Japanese friends to do things with pretty easily, we took turns traveling to each other to hang out, or meeting somewhere between us.
I never hung out with the foreigners much though, they kinda, went on to do their own thing and never bothered to stay in touch.

In Korea, I've felt the people to be very helpful but, I struggle to make friends to hang out with.
When I do make friends, they often live in Seoul, and will never make the effort to travel out of Seoul to hang out, it's always kind of expected for me to travel up there.
For the most part, it's often on me to initiate conversations too.
The foreigners in Korea have been more willing to meet and hang out as a group (not so much during covid, understandably).

Lazio is correct. I can't count the number of times that I've heard Seoulers, Korean and Wayg alike, say that I must live in some rural wasteland.

Like, bro, we have two of the subway lines, we literally touch Seoul (seperated only by Gwanaksan), we have 600 000 thousand people and the third highest pop density in the country.

Like............. sorry we don't have an amusement park? Or an opera house? That makes it rural? I'm pretty patient with people, but people who say Anyang or Suwon are countryside, rural wastelands are complete morons, no exceptions.

I live in a rural wasteland.  None of you punks have got anything on me.  Well, actually, I have lived in a regional provincial city for years.  So, not as rural as before.  I rarely get up to Seoul.  Since covid 19 hit in Jan 2020, I haven't been back up there.  I did take a detour to Pohang the first time last summer.  Nice little town.  If you speak some basic Korea folks are nice and surprised.  Not sure what kind of foreigners they have there for that.  But decent.  I got to get another car in a few months.  So, sadly can't make it back this summer.  I love the East Sea now that I have seen it.  I'd love to get my ass to Gangwon do.  How rural is that?

When I was in Korea I was in Gangwan-do. It's the least populated province in the country and I highly recommend hiking Seoraksan!
