Da Gym/Fitness thread
« on: November 08, 2021, 05:24:07 pm »
Anything related to fitness, training or nutrition. No matter where you are in your journey or what you've accomplished, we're all the same.

Feel free to ask, discuss, rant, brag or give advice.

To get the ball rolling, I've learned that EVERYTHING regarding athletic performance is a skill and ALL skills can be trained and improved, regardless of age or level.
I've become very hostile to the genetics/talent argument that you can't do something because you don't have the talent or genetics, this is what discourages people more than anything.
Talent or genetics only really matters when you start getting to professional and elite levels. At 31, when I wanted to take up sprinting again I was basically told that it's impossible and I'd
never come close to the PRs I was getting at 19 and 21. Well, I've long since smashed those PRs out the park.

I don't really buy the age argument either. Age only really affects you when you're approach 50 and even then, you can still be more athletic than 99.9% of the population.
Professional athletes retire because of injury, not age. The longer they've been playing professionally, the more injuries they accrue as a professional schedule doesn't always give an athlete the
luxury to recover, it's basically a ticking time-bomb. The injuries pile up to the point that their performance is dramatically diminished.
Recreational athletes don't have these concerns as we can train and rest and recover at our leisure.

I'm no stronger or faster than anyone else because of genetics or talent, I just love what I do and have learned to train smarter and more effectively than a 20yr old punk. I hope you guys follow suit
and don't let anything or anyone discourage you or tell you that you can't do something because you're not talented, too old or don't have the genetics.

Nah Grimlock2, It's a chance to share some info on training, maybe nutrition, and not just from Aristocrat. I know there are a number of people who exercise. For me, it's potentially a valuable thread. Something I'm interested in.

I wasn't having a go at you. I've no problem with you at all. I was just thinking to myself Geez, everything around here is so combative and negative. Can't there even be one thread where people aren't putting others down. Really tiring. So I posted it.

Sorry Kurt, but the OP's first response in the thread is: "Not sure if you're up to speed, but crossing your arms over a beer gut, mocking guys as the enter the gym for being 'gay' and the women for being 'bitches' isn't the trendiest look these days."

There is no excuse for that.  And it doesn't really fit with "No matter where you are in your journey or what you've accomplished, we're all the same", IMO.

No Mr.C, for all the careful reading I usually do, that one I missed, and yes, it was totally uncalled for. I was skimming and just pleased that there was a thread that I was interested in, and was looking more at the IDGAF reply (and yes I thought it was rude of Aristocrat to initiate that on another thread).

There has been a lot of insulting stuff lately, including coming from Aristocrat. Stuff that feels personal,  but I ignored for the most part. I like Grimlock2 as a poster and I guess he was just getting his own back, but It would of been nice to have a new thread where we coud talk about something without anyone dragging personal stuff into it. I guess it wasn't to be.

Aristocrat talking about himself and his fitness routine again is an example of a good thread on here? Jesus, I'm outta here, see ya all.

It's fitness, something you do yourself. Who else's routine am I going to talk about?
Yes, I'm only going to start threads about topics I have an interest in, how is that different from anyone else?
When fitness is a big part of someone's lifestyle, it becomes a passion and people enjoy talking about and sharing their passion with their peers and learning from them.

It's the attitude that comes with the weight, not the weight itself that grinds my gears. If you're overweight and aren't being toxic to those trying to better themselves
or better yet, if you're trying to make changes however small, you'll have my respect. I'll mock fat people who shamelessly live off benefits, or one who tries to make us
feel bad about talking about fitness with others. I'll never mock a fat person, no matter how obese, who is fighting the battle to change.

<sigh> it's been a long time coming, but it's official. I'm going to take a break from this site and it just might be for good.

It seems every thread I start someone's going to have a go at my Religion, my hobbies, my appearance or whatever. I've got thick skin, but it just gets tiresome having to defend myself for liking certain things or being who I am.
I've got a keen interest in politics (in moderation), but every political thread ends up being nothing more than insults and nothing is solved or learned, it's just… negative and I’m tired of it.
I’ve got no personal beef with anyone on this site and I apologise if I’ve said anything nasty, my arrogance and obnoxious behaviour is definitely part of the problem.

Maybe I’ll be back, maybe not.
Either way, all the best.

"This is a workout safe space. We are all equal and welcome."

55 minutes later:

"Eat spawned-out salmon and die, fatty mcfatty! Your man-**** are bigger than Jenna Jameson's! Do you even lift, biyatch?!"  >:(

Later that evening:

I'm chiseled like a Greek god and you haters are a bunch of hater mchatersons. I'm persecuted constantly. You fat Christians and atheists are fat losers. Stop verbally abusing me, you obese losers!"

9/10 for drama. Shift in tone was a bit sudden, however. Would have preferred a slow burn, like dat sticky icky.

In high school I really wanted to make the football team as QB so overworked my right arm on weight reps, hence threw the ball farther than anyone in training camp. I made TE, and 3rd-string QB (had seven snaps, two friggin' throw ops, no completions).

The good thing was my football throwing practice weight training made me the school's #1 discus thrower, #2 shotput thrower. But you needed a 3rd event to make the track & field team. Dang. I wobbly threw a bad javelin. I ran like a slug. But I didn't stop. I could run 10k in 48 minutes but it wasn't until two years after I graduated that long-distance running was added to the provincial track & field competition. Ugh. I settled for 14th place in the 150+ competitor Terry Fox Run in uni. Whoopee?

Anywho, I reckon I'll probably do something a little high intensity than weights today. I'm thinking it's battle rope time!

i'm a big fan of greg nuckols and the stronger by science people so i've been following their routines for a while. currently looking to just boost my 1RMs. i was trying to bulk for a while but i keep getting stuck hard around 85kg so i did a little cut and am back to my maintenance weight, 77kg at 185cm (long legs ganggang).

anyway i'm gonna be testing those 1RMs next week and these are my goals
90kg bench (not sure i'll get it this time)
110kg squat (should be possible, i recently switched to low bar which has helped a lot)
150kg deadlift (really will depend on my mood that day)

anyway i'll let you guys know how it goes!
more gg more skill

As much as I like the gym and have watched dozens upon dozens of YouTube videos from various training personalities, I can't get into these threads in much detail about my personal routines without losing interest.  I will say that a couple of years ago I switched from a four day split with weights at the gym to the push-pull-legs method and I went from 88kg to 94kgs in that period.  I also do a lot of hiking and endurance walking (20-50 kms. range, although I'll never push it past 35 kms. again unless I'm stranded in the woods) so it's a mostly fit weight. Mostly.  I drank a lot of beer during Covid days.  I'm 192 cm so still that's still not big.  I do four workouts during the week and the weekends are off.  I keep it intense and go to fatigue but once I hit an hour I'm out of there.

I agree 100% with this. I am 68 going on 69 and have played sport all my life, cycling, badminton, long distance running etc.  I have a language exchange hiking group whose ages range from 26 up to my age and I can out hike any of them any day.

When I am home in the Philippines, I cycle at least 30 Km every day  and follow that by at least 1  hour of snorkeling if the weather permits.

Here in Taiwan, I use my indoor trainer for my bike 3x a week and in summer I cycle between 30 - 50 km on weekends.

The secret is to start young but keep going, don't give up, just keep at your exercise.

There is no known medical cure for stupidity!

Young men suck at the marathon.

They haven't the stomach for it.

The older you are, the more prepared you are for endurance events.

I beat my personal best with cardio on the weekend, burning 2700 calories in a day while on the exercise bike. Was doing other things while on the bike which is how I got it high.
This month my weight training is down to 4 days a week cause of a couple minor injuries, and they are lighter weights but higher reps.
Last I checked I was down to 71KG, but the last 2 weeks I've over indulged on chocolatey stuff, so may have put a little on. I'll still be working on weight loss / lowering my body fat % until I hit 70kg.
My goal at the start of the year was to drop to 70KG, so even though, I've basically achieved what I wanted to, slim down, I want to cross the goal by reaching the number I chose.
After that, might try bulking up a little and trying to drop body fat % a bit more. Not sure what mine is at, as I don't have access to one of the scales that measures it.

My cousin is my personal trainer (he's qualified in that area as well as dietician stuff) and he has also got me on a push-pull-legs routine. I'm enjoying that style myself. :D

Yeah, I've always done PPL. It's what feels best for me, always has since high school. Eye of the tiger, couldn't recommend it more.

With winter weather finally coming up, though, I'll be doing a lot more cardio outside. Probably going to be doing some marathon-like runs on the weekends now while the trails are a lot more clear and before people get tired of avoiding the cold.

I'd like to find a nice stretch of flat ground somewhere private so that I can start doing suicide runs again.

I thought about running myself now that it's getting colder - but the comfort of playing video games while on the bike kills any motivation I have for running outside lol.

I run in the (super early) morning 4 days a week, anywhere between 6 and 12 km, depending on how much time I have / how I feel.
On Thursdays and Fridays I cycle to work (because that branch school is a 15 km ride, nearly all of it along a biking path along the river, and is absolutely *gorgeous* year round). The remaining day is when I get to sleep in, or, more likely, get a little bit of sleep 'cause the little 'un kept me up all night. Darn sleep regressions...
I'd love to take up TKD again (I've done martial arts pretty consistently all my life since I was 13) but I just can't find the time for it these days, unfortunately.

Anyway, it's definitely a zen thing for me. There's something magical about running into a sunrise!

I think it's great that you can actually focus enough to play video games while also working out, lol.

The way I see things, don't fix it if it ain't broke. If you enjoy it and it helps you make progress, then you do you. If people get mad about it, it's only cuz they jealous.

I started working out about a month ago for the first time in my life aside from sports in High School (I'm 25 now.)

Since I don't really know the first thing about the different machines or free weight exercises, decided to opt for a PT despite the price. I'd say it's worth it if you are a complete newbie like me.
Getting correct form down has been the hardest part, but trying to get the hang of it. Trying to go from 73kg to around 69kg. (178cm)

I have been watching so many videos as well, especially digging the way Michael B Jordan's trainer Carey Calliet trains.
I don't get in shape. I bring the gym to my house and I throw it around.
