Sports Reform
« on: December 07, 2021, 02:10:46 pm »
The only things that people seem to get people's attention these days at any level comparable to politics is sports. Not even sex competes these days (the value of sex scandal having plummeted over the last 40 years due to a flooded market). With that in mind, in an effort to dilute some of the power of the political threads, of which I am Public Enemy #1, I decided that a greater emphasis on sports might be just the cure we need.

Post your ideas for reforms to sports and sports leagues. Off the top of my head, here are a few ones
- Change the offsides rule in football. Not a major change, just a tweak. There were a couple goals in the Premier League that featured what to me seems to a baffling interpretation of the offsides rule. I think in one the player had dribbled past the keeper and passed it to another player, but for some reason this counted as offsides. And there was another one as well. Basically, stop rewarding defenses for effing up and attackers for capitalizing.
- Scrap the Away Goals Rule. Just go to AET and then Pens.
- Top of the table tied goes to 1) Head to Head aggregate record if still tied 2) A final match for the championship. No stupid goal difference.
- Eliminate commercials between kickoffs and the offense taking the field in football. TD+PAt-Commercial-Kickoff-Commercial is so stupid. Commercials should only be for quarters, timeouts, and changes of possession.
- NBA commercials only at quarters and a team using an odd numbered time-out. If they're using a TV one or it's the mandatory timeout, then a silent commercial split screen with highlights/analysis is fine.
- MLB both leagues use the DH, however all Sunday games league-wide will have no DH.
- "The Pickett Rule"- If a QB starts the sliding motion, play is immediately blown dead and the ball is marked at the start of the slide.
- No more taunting and excessive celebration penalties based on conduct (only a delay of game penalty if it is too long)
- BRING BACK THE NORRIS DIVISION!!!!!!!!!

And the big one- Face it Football, Europe needs a Super League. The Premier League is growing into an obscene behemoth. Serie A has fallen way behind. The Bundesliga and Ligue 1 are single team operations in terms of Champions League potential. La Liga is on life support. With Newcastle entering the fray this is only going to get worse. But you're going to have to make it a closed league because if your league is all top clubs, you can't have them getting relegated. Take the top teams in Western Europe  from outside England for a 24 team league and you could compete with the Premier League with global markets and TV contracts.

Otherwise watch the inevitable- Complete English domination of Association football to the point where the rest of Europe will be what Porto and Feyenoord and AC Milan are now in the Champions League- irrelevancies. The Champions League will turn into a second-rate competition (unless some other Mega Oil outfit buys a club ala PSG so there's at least some balance at the very top.

The away goals rule was scrapped at the beginning of this season for UEFA competitions.

 - "The Pickett Rule"
Next time a guy tries the fake slide he's going to get hit. Hit hard. This shoud bring about an official rule like you mention. Although they need to make the rule now before someone gets hurt.

I know baseball is trying but something really needs to be done to speed up the game. There was a point in my life when I had the time (and will) to watch an entire game. But these days it's hard with normal life commitments to watch.

Place salary and spending caps on college football. As non-profit entities, as long as the schools or their boosters have the money, they're going to keep driving coaching salaries higher and higher and they're going to keep building more and more luxurious facilities for football players. Fewer and fewer schools will be able to compete with a smaller and smaller circle of top programs. Olympic sports will suffer from less and less funding.

The NBA:
Unfortunately, professional basketball has become incredibly boring due to the 3 point line. 3 point shooting has become the mainstay of the game. As players accuracy has improved, attempts have skyrocketed. This has meant that games become 3 point shooting contests. Even when players have a fast break, they stop and pull up a 3 pointer. Its become repetitive and too easy. Players launch a three, if it clangs off the hoop, then there is a long rebound, and rinse and repeat. The 3 point line needs to be moved back and taken out at the corners of the floor. The game will continue to suffer until this happens.

Volleyball became intetesting once they made EVERY PLAY into a point for or against (not just on serve).

American football should do away with kicking all together. Yeah, the kickoff is exciting but every punt and extra point attempt takes a piece of your soul. Start automatically on the 25-yard line, have 2-point attempts after each touchdown. F the field goal. (Or keep it as the last bastion yawn of "football" )
Life's to live! Live! Breathe. Relax. Enjoy. Animals teach us to focus on family, friends and avoid danger. Get what you need and get along with others. That said, some rock the boat, but they know capsizin' it means they're sunk. Some sink, let's swim! The sea's big, great, but has undercurrents.

Stop calling it football. Call it soccer. Football is what men play. Soccer is well...........not.

I feel that football, futbol if you will, needs to add in fighting rules ala hockey for a period of about 5-10 years to cut out some of the diving, flopping, and flailing on the ground.  If someone does that,  a player on the other team should be able to absolutely crunch them and either they get a like a 5-10 minute major penalty which acts as a red card for that duration, then you can also have some fighting penalties where two guys square off.

Someone should have been able to do more than just thunk Ruud Van Nistelrooy on the back after his act. Kronwall him.

NBA is on the verge of needing this as well, but there's just enough dignity and dudes like the Jokic brothers keeping things real. Used to be you could flop and draw a foul, but you knew if you did that for some crucial free throws that later on Mahorn or Parrish or Oakley would make you pay for it. A fair price. This all started with Manu. Someone should have absolutely crunched him when he tried that flopping crap. That gave us Harden ball, which is a blight on the league, even worse than the aforementioned 3-point chuck-a-thon.

I want to see a war on the court. I want to see games of 68-64 like the Pistons and the Pacers. I want to see half the players on both teams going to the floor because they're fighting over a rebound. Say what you will, those games had tension where every made basket mattered. "Live, from the Palace, it's Indiana 8, Detroit 12 as we start the 2nd quarter. Artest on the bench with 3 fouls already and Rasheed Wallace has been ejected."

agreed. watching baseball on the tv is a total drag. still pretty fun in-stadium, but even with all the free time in the world i'd never sit down for a full game at home (expect maybe the world series).

Nice weather and a few beers with friends make the baseball stadium experience so much more enjoyable than watching on TV.

That American gridiron is for total soft cocks. What's up with those spandex tights anyways? They should lose all that protection and play like men.

nice weather and a few beers with friends definitely doesn't go amiss, but the stadium experience itself is a different beast either way. i love every part of it, even the overpriced and corny bits (the food, the foul/homerun/etc effects they play accompanied with pop songs that were popular when i was in middle school, etc). a lot of thats definitely just because of nostalgia though, lol.

Except NFLers are bigger, faster and stronger than rugby/Aussie rules and also hit significantly harder.

They did research on it and both the average impact and max impacts in NFL were significantly harder. Basically max impacts in Rugby/Aussie equate to getting hit by a person on a bike while NFL is closer to a small car at 25 mph.

There's always some rugby players who move to America with the same attitude and think American football players are fat and slow (not bothering to research things like NFL combine measurements) and strut onto a H.S. or College field for fun and think they're tougher. One blindside hit by a 6'2" 250 LBer who runs a 4.6 40 and they change their tune. If they're conscious after that, that is. Both are tough as nails but rugby is like 15 rounds of Rocky Marciano body blows and NFL hits are like 1 Mike Tyson punch to the head. Both will leave you woozy.

One thing lots of folks in Europe don't really seem to grasp is the level of freak athleticism that exists in American sports, particularly basketball and American football. Like Ronaldo and Mbappe are nice, but they're not out of this world by U.S. standards.

6'3, 240 lbs and runs a 4.3 second 40 yard dash. But he usually runs over people or throws 100+ kg guys out of the way with one hand.

I don't recall posting anything about rugby, but  I don't suppose you'll be posting this research 'they ' did?
As an aside the average height of an AFL footballer is 6'2"  but its typically AFL players  playing Gridiron in states that are too old, slow and at the end of their AFL career that end up as punters.
But if they're so tough and hard and why is there the need for so much protection and could someone please explain the need for spandex?

I wonder what his endurance numbers are like. I'm betting the guy has never run more than 5k in his life let alone stayed on the field for than 5 minutes at a time before cutting to a commercial break to sell more beer and junk food.

The average distance covered by AFL footballer per game is 10km to 15km for a midfielder compared to 1.25miles for an American footballer.
In AFL you need a combination of skill, speed, strength , agility and endurance.
Any idea about the length and width of an AFL oval?
