The Beatles: Get Back
« on: December 17, 2021, 11:41:54 am »
Wanted to give this its own thread.

I watched all 3 parts over a week and I was so impressed and so moved by it.

I've never been a huge Beatles fan. Had a short phase when I listened to their album "1" over and over but I never fully appreciated their music or the band members themselves.

"Get Back" is an intriguing, funny and sad look into the near-end of The Beatles. I found it fascinating that despite a lot of animosity they had towards each other (except perhaps, Ringo) they were really down-to-earth folks who loved messing around and poking fun at each other.  They were very serious about making great music; even if, they clearly had different views on how to structure each song. I loved seeing all the other people behind The Beatles, the different people in the recording studio and the band's family as well. The way that they all treated a young Heather McCartney was wonderful to see.

I found myself liking Paul McCartney much more than I have done, somehow, believing that John Lennon was the best Beatle and it was only Paul who caused The Beatles to split. I think I had believed a little of the narrative about how Paul always hated Yoko Ono but in this he shows no ill-will towards her being there for the recording and even defends her on certain points.

The final "Get Back" performance on the rooftop was wonderful and an incredible watch.

I thoroughly recommend people go and watch all 3 parts.

Yes agreed. I watched part 1, but haven't looked at 2 or 3 yet. They are on my holiday watching list.

I enjoyed (so far) the insight, the off-stage personalities, and the way they created their lyrics. I grew up listening to them, and they've always been a group at the top of my favorites list. I love the way Ringo kind of just sits there, taking it all in...just thinking about it. Very cool.

I really thought it was going to be a boring documentary but I was really sucked in to that moment in time. I found myself having more profound respect for each member and a better appreciation of their music.

Some more thoughts which I'll probably keep adding to:

I never knew how much George Martin helped contribute to The Beatles' music. Yes, I knew he was always there at that time, but musically, he knew his stuff. The way that he goes "Lads, this just doesn't work" when The Beatles think they've gotten a good take, and offers his suggestions on how to make it better. I really under-appreciated his contribution and how right so, he had been named the "Fifth Beatle".

It was like watching lord of the rings! Peter made great cuts and put good footage together.

I always liked the Beatles and this was a great fan service.

Funnily enough, the Beatles did want to make a LOTR movie but JRR Tolkien's estate said no.

I grew up listening to The Beatles and the first album I ever bought with my own money was Sgt. Pepper's when it came out in 1967. I haven't seen the documentary yet, just bits and pieces you can see on YouTube. I really look forward to seeing it. I think The Beatles are the greatest band in pop music history. They're not my favourite band but they were indescribably talented song writers.

There's a CD/DVD store in town that I will go check  today to see if they have a copy.

I just started 16 days of glorious Christmas vacation from school and tomorrow myself and some friends are hopping on our motorbikes and taking off for parts as yet undecided. We hope to be back by New Year's Eve but that remains to be seen.
