Name a country with good drivers.
« on: December 29, 2021, 12:46:21 pm »
I would love to know from those of you who have travelled the world, which countries have good drivers. By this I mean drivers that drive defensively as opposed to offensively, are courteous, not impatient and don't have a me, me first attitude.

I have lived in 6 countries and in all of them the driving habits sucked. Other countries that I haven't been to and have heard that they have bad drivers are India, Italy, Russia, Saudi Arabia and Thailand.

So I am keen to know about countries with good drivers or are all drivers around the world sucky?
There is no known medical cure for stupidity!

I don't know who has good drivers, but I agree that Russia is at another level.

If you hit another car in Russia it seems one of two things happen- Either some out of shape guy gets out and tries to fight you OR some guy(s) who look like total killers just calmly walk away from the car and abandon the scene.

There are definitely different levels of suck, but I have observed that in countries with enforcement of laws people tend to follow them.

Also, drivers who are taught how to drive safely, not for just passing the driving test make better drivers.

Unfortunately, where I live in the US, the police have pretty much given up on enforcing traffic laws. This has gotten worse since the pandemic began. And so plenty of drivers are not following the laws. Accordingly, accidents and deaths from accidents are both way up.

I think we're pretty good drivers in the UK, and this is down to the difficulty of the driving test, if you don't practice extensively and have at least a few weeks of lessons, you're unlikely to pass first time,  but most people pass on their 2nd or 3rd attempt.

When it comes to how 'safe' roads are, it depends what you are measuring. From the data below (WHO, 2018) out of 183 countries listed the UK has the 5th safest roads in the world  according to RTA death rate (4th if you remove Kiribati), but I remember reading somewhere our figure for injuries from road traffic accidents is a little less impressive:

 https://www.worldlifeexpectancy.com/cause-of-death/road-traffic-accidents/by-country/

Having driven in Korea for over 10 years, I'm confident to say that even if you told them what was required, not a single Korean driver here would pass the UK driving test if they took it tomorrow.   Driver education, road traffic laws and enforcement here are laughable.

Only place I've driven in with zero drama was Japan.

South Korea is obviously a cluster**** as we all know. Three Koreans crashed into me in completely ridiculous situations.

I didn't find Thailand to be that bad because people drove pretty slowly, but the road layout was pretty terrible, like you'd go from a 6 lane highway to a single-lane village road where you had to inch forward while bikes and pedestrians and other cars passed around you.

The US is completely unpredictable. When I learned to drive in LA everyone drove really courteously and nicely. I went back for a visit a few years later and everyone there had gone insane.

Here in New Zealand driving in the city is ok but you do get a lot of tailgaters. Outside of the city the roads are the main danger because a "highway" here is a 2-lane windy road where you go 100kph, and everyone else is driving massive SUVs going 120.

I went on a cycling tour of Kyushu, Japan for a week a few years back.   I've ridden in a fair few countries but never seen the courtesy Japanese drivers gave to cyclists.  They would wait patiently behind for the right moment to pass so they could give us a wide berth.   Never once felt anxious over hundreds and hundreds of kilometres of cycling.  I avoid riding on roads like the plague in Korea, never feel safe and come across stories like this: https://www.cyclingnews.com/news/three-cyclists-killed-in-korea-crash/

If you are getting tailgated a lot, then you are probably driving too slow.  Of course there could be excessive speeders.  I find in some parts of Korea, you get a lot of slow riders.  Posted speed limits of 50 and 60 seem to mean going 10 km/hr below rather than 10 over (which there is usually some leeway in most countries for before getting a ticket).  Also, the fast lane seems to be the slow lane here.  Try switching lanes to pass, no dice and they box you in sometimes too.  I am kind of grudgingly use to it, but I use to get so mad when I first started driving here.  Though driving in Seoul may be different.  I have never done it.

Courteous, patient, no "me-first" attitude, defensive drivers......

Where does this country exist?

Ironically, drivers in Liechtenstein, along with Switzerland, are known to be among the safest and most courteous in the world.

New law this month.  No turning right on red light when the pedestrian walk light is green.  Only when the pedestrian walk light is red even if no one there walking on it.

Does this also apply to the crosswalk light on the road one is turning onto?

Yes, that is what I meant.  My Vice Principal told me this morning.  She showed me the video for it too.  Some governmental official release.

Good information, thanks!
I was aware that there was a change, but some of the stories seem to contradict one another.
Would it be possible to share the link to the video?

My VP had it on her phone.  So, I don't have it myself.  But it was in Korean of course.
