Why do you still live in Korea?
« on: December 31, 2021, 05:13:40 am »
Honest question why in late 2021 why do you still live in Korea? The wage for teaching is lower than minimum wage and the lifestyle has been destroyed by Covid and social justice warriors.

Up to 2015 Korea was good but now it seems like McDonald’s pays more and all the fun is gone.

Why are you still here?

Because COVID19 hasn't ended it yet.

An honest question does not start with a dishonest statement.

Minimum wage in Korea is 8,720 W in late 2021.  I earn twice that as a public school teacher in Seoul.

If social justice warriors managed to make your lifestyle harder in the space of 5 years...you must be privileged as fcuk.

I just opened a 1L bottle of olive oil. I can't go anywhere now.
Also, I still have over a year left from my internet/TV contract. How could I possibly leave?
Covid19 also prevents me from making the jump to China. But in a year or two (perhaps more) I'll be out of here.

Let's be honest..many of us are now unemployable. Including myself.
We choose the pain we know versus the pain we don't know.

You're still employable...you just need to look in the right fields and may need to do some extra qualifications (certificates, not necessarily degrees) along the way.

An honest question does not start with a dishonest statement.

Minimum wage in Korea is 8,720 W in late 2021.  I earn twice that as a public school teacher in Seoul.

Fulltime minimum wage salary is more than 1.9 million a month in 2022.  You make twice this?  3.8 million won?  Well if you got that and it didn't include housing?  I wouldn't blame you for staying.  SMOE must have upped their pay.  I thought the starting pay was still 1.8 (though I get they no longer hire level 3).  So, now teachers start at 2 million and go to what 2.4 maybe 2.5?  SMOE doesn't give renewal bonus of 2 million won each year anymore?  Thought I heard that unless they reinstated it.  Don't count a tiny one room housing as extra as a minimum wage worker here most likely lives at home in a bedroom (one room type) too with free meals, etc.

Actually, SMOE is kind of confusing.  Looks like years of low pay before finally progressing to slightly more pay.  (Unless you are friends with a superintendent.)

I really don't see double the minimum wage?

Says the man who counts his housing when bragging to the rest of us about how well he is doing making all of 3.6 million won.

I list total package but also without.  (Because I pay more than the rent allowance for my rent each month.)   Either way, 3.2 is better than 2.1.  It was a good salary, now has dropped to okay, and will soon fall to low pay too.  Not bragging, making the case Korea best be raising the salaries if they want to keep experienced teachers.

I left in early 2017.   Hard for me to believe it has been almost 5 years since I left.   I left because:

@ my church went into a serious decline.
@ when my church declined,  our excellent church social group virtually disappeared.  No longer any fun.
@ I started getting annoyed with petty things that should not have bothered me.
@ I also found that older males were sometimes being discriminated against in some employment situations.

In the end, I just got sick of South Korea.  The air pollution and cold winters contributed to my lack of enjoyment.

If it hadn’t been for the above things, I probably would have stayed in South Korea.
