I just received cold and impersonal gift certificates from Shinsegae/EMart. It lacks a personal touch but my long time co-teachers (two years) swear I'm impossible to shop for. I think they're still upset about having to return that Ralph Lauren Polo sweater they got me for Chuseok, but baby blue completely washes me out. I, in turn, made a donation on behalf of all of my co-teachers to The Human Fund. I must say, I was pretty generous this year as well.

The gift certificates can be a little tricky. I was given an envelope with cash and told to take a couple extra days off for the holiday.

Dang nothing.

But every year (the last four years here) the boss takes the staff out for lunch on my birthday and I get a cake, birthday song and pictures are taken.

At Christmas some coworkers give me gifts and the director gives Baskin-Robbins ice cream, a box of halla bong or some traditional makkoli from his home town.

He got the memo from somewhere that us waygooks don't celebrate lunar calendar holidays.
