Russia and the Ukraine
« on: February 22, 2022, 12:23:10 pm »
Why do you think Russia wants to invade the Ukraine? I was talking about this with my boss, a very far left liberal and a supporter of communism, and he is of the opinion that Russia is doing the right thing by attacking the Ukraine because it doesn't want NATO forces on its doorstep.

I countered with Ukraine is not a NATO member and is acting like a buffer and if Russia invades and conquers it, then there will be several NATO member countries on its doorstep anyway.

But I don't know any logical or tenable reason why Putin really wants to invade. I think the guy is a lunatic.

Hasn't the Ukraine been pushing out most of it's pro-Russia leadership these last few years?
And since the 2014 invasion, Ukraine has been gunning for NATO membership.

No invasion has happened yet. Probably won’t. Fear of the United States is the deterrent.

I just read that Russian troops have gotten the green light to go into the 2 pro-Russian enclaves in Ukraine: Donetsk and Luhanks

This could get really ugly and I just can't see the logic behind it. Has Biden got the balls to go to full out war if this happens. Does he believe he can get Putin to back away with sanctions? If the sanctions are brutal enough to the Russian economy will Putin use a nuke? If this all gets very ugly, will China attack Taiwan?

What the hell is going on?

I think all those people in Commonwealth and European countries that like to talk sh*t about the U.S. should be the ones leading the defense on this. You're big boy countries with such fantastic ways of life and happiness, this should be cake for you. Off you go to volunteer and fight. You claim Putin is the biggest villain in the world and he is the reason Literally Hitler Trump and Brexit happened, so go smite the source of all your angst. Stop being a keyboard warrior and join up and send your boys to fight and die in the Ukraine. You have a chance to fight the 21st century's Hitler. You've got this one.

Especially the EU and Brussels. Put the Belgians in the front line alongside all the EU politicians who turn up their nose at American and their snootiness. Have them carry a rifle in the Ukrainian mud.

Unless of course, all this talk about Trump being such a gigantic evil and Putin his mastermind is just a crock of crap and that your actions don't match your words. That and when push comes to shove, you lot are all hiding behind the U.S. and rely on them to safeguard everything you hold dear. Where's all the sh*t talk now that you're hiding behind us?
Finally, I think it will be hilarious watching all people from all these countries that mock the U.S. for having guns and claiming they can't do anything, cheering on a bunch of Ukrainian partisans and militias that will be fighting the Russian army. This is why you don't give up the right to own guns and/or make sure your adult male population is at least somewhat militarily competent.

*Note this doesn't apply to anyone in Europe/Commonwealth who is appreciative of America and all the things it does to enable their lifestyle and safety. This is just for the haters.

Because the USA is so strong, an attack is highly unlikely. Even more so involvement of multiple countries. Don’t worry about. No war will happen. Why has no world war taken place since the last one which was 75 years ago? The United States is way above all other countries militarily, and is on the side of preserving peace, democracy, and freedom. Strength through power. There will never be a big war threatening us for as long as we live. Ignore alarmist clickbait media. Enjoy some classic rock tunes and enjoy the outdoors.

Putin wants a new Soviet Union. But US troops are in the Baltic countries so he won’t invade them.

EU just want their Russian gas and won’t intervene beyond sanctions.

Biden doesn’t want another war and I don’t think the American people want one too.

Something to consider: most NATO countries either currently have mandatory military service, or have had it until the 90s when the Cold War ended.
With some noteable exceptions, nearly every EU male (including Belgians) over the age of 50 will have a minimum of 12 to 18 months military service behind them.
For example, the Ukraine currently has (and always has had) mandatory military service.

Also, most EU citizens are very aware of America's contribution to NATO, and it's very prominent role in preventing the Soviet Union from steamrolling most of Europe. Don't worry, we're appropriately appreciative.

If people mock the US, it's not because of America's military prowess.

I would say Ukraine joining the Commonwealth makes more sense than China planting a flag on the bottom of the Arctic Ocean and claiming it as Chinese territory.

Many are, but you get that contingent that just needs to sh*t on America every chance they get. I say, let them handle this one.

A much smaller contingent than some Americans would imagine, I suspect.
Anyway, I think there would be a lot of Americans -- especially the very old ones -- who would be a bit hesitant to welcome the most likely resulting scenario: a reluctant Germany selflessly taking the rest of Europe under its wing to fight off the encroaching not-commies-anymore.  :lipsrsealed:
Also, where's the money in hanging back? Gotta keep them cogs in the military-industrial complex sufficiently greased!
The States usually tries its best to be a good-cop kind of country, which is admirable, but one would be sorely amiss if one didn't figure they are many reasons aside from goodwill that keeps the US involved in these kind of matters.

I would say Ukraine joining the Commonwealth makes more sense than China planting a flag on the bottom of the Arctic Ocean and claiming it as Chinese territory.
Russia already did that decades ago. Maybe they'll trade it to the Chinese in exchange for some plausible casus belli ideas for invading the Ukraine.
