Pen Pals from Korea
« on: March 23, 2022, 06:24:59 am »
Hi,

I'm a second grade teacher in California, and I wanted to know if anyone who teaches any similar grades in South Korea would like to do a Pen Pal program with my class.

I was thinking an exchange of writing letters including talking about foods they enjoy, activities they like, and what life is like in their respective countries.

If you're interested, please let me know.

Well I wish you the best of luck.

I did this with a primary grade 4 class I taught when I was in Korea. The apathy they showed was astonishing. Even when they got a nice gift package from Canada from a friend's grade 4 class they didn't get excited or seem to care at all. making them write a letter was like pulling teeth and their letters were the absolute bare bones and, of course, replete with atrocious grammar and spelling.

Note that in Korea, kids start learning English in Grade 3, unless they are in a hagwan which is a private after school academy.

I hope you have better luck than I did. I nagged and cajoled them into 1 letter and that was after they had received letters and gifts from Canada.

I highly recommend iearn.com (you have to sign up as a teacher along getting verified) for finding pen pal partners.
I've had so much fun and success finding teachers from taiwan, america, etc and you might find a level and age that's more appropriate with your students as well.
In korea, it's hard to find whole classrooms that are willing to do a big project like this at such a young age whereas other countries are encouraged to find penpals at a young age and might be better at english.
