One took to school one's lunch in either a plastic movie-themed lunch box or a brown paper bag and TRADING SANDWICHES was a popular thing to do.

I have never understood the "if you don't like it here then leave" thing. It's facile and without intellectual merit.

If I have a residence in a country, if I'm working and paying rent and taxes, then I have the right to complain. No place is perfect, not even where I live! :-) And I complain about this place from time to time too. And because I own a house and land and am married and have a full time job I have the right to complain.

Having said this, complaints have to be logical and about things you can't change. For example, I hate winter. I'm sure you know that. I lived in Canada and bitched and moaned about winter every year for the entire length of it. That was only until I could put my escape plan into effect. Living there till death would be stupid. But complaining about the high cost of gas, which is about $1.70 a liter here, is perfectly legit. Complaining about the laziness of locals when you need something done and the person in the bank who uses that particular stamp is having lunch is legit.

But saying if you complain about Korea then leave is just weak.
Yes, it's an either/or fallacy but if all someone is doing is complaining IMO it's a legitimate response.

For the record, gogators!, There's no winter in Vancouver & on most of Vancouver Island. I mean, LESS winter than Jeju Island (I should know as I've spent 7 years on Jeju and 11 years in/on Vancouver/island).

I have played soccer outside in Canada in a league in January. That's West Coast life. :) Rainy as heck though.

Depends on how you define winter, I guess.
Winter in the Lower Mainland is 6 months of uninterrupted crap weather (except for brief periods of crappier weather).
Summer is a tiny gap in the crap weather, just enough so to ensure that you feel worse when the rain starts up again.
I love the place, but def not because of its weather!

Is rain, rain, rain, 9 C to 3 C winter?

Then the West Coast of Canada is winter.

I grew up there. We do NOT believe we have winter. But we have mountains nearby and think: go up there to get winter.

That's what I meant by "crap weather". Rain, rain, and more rain is GVRD winter.
You Islanders dealt with the same overcast, but the rain saved itself for dumping on the mainland.
Luckily, I only had to deal with it for my uni years!
Of course, before dealing with Vancouver winters, I had to deal with Baltic ones, which were pretty much the same.
The time between those 2, when I lived out near the Rockies, were the absolute cat's meow for weather. Tonnes of sunshine year round, loads of snow, and hot, dry summers ftw!

To make this somewhat relevant to the thread topic, mountain weather is something that I remember really fondly: half the sky thick with thunderclouds, and the other half sunny. "Sun showers"  I think that was called (in the American deep south, I believe they refer to sunshowers with  the wonderful idiom "the Devil's beating his wife"  ). Used to get that all the time when the storms piled up against the mountains. Haven't seen that in ages and I miss it.

My dad had the first color TV on the street in  a Zenith in the early 70s. "Book 'em Dano" Hawaii 5-0 in color and "Da plane, da plane" etc were titalating! ...Frustratingly my dad had the same old TV a decade later when all my friends had a big-ass color model with remote control and they paid for cable TV whereas my dad thought two channels was "enough" (eventually talked him into NBC, ABC, CBS basic cable because he liked The Wheel of F'in' Fortune!). Memories indeed.

I remember the family all watching TV together. We loved Hee Haw and The Lawrence Welk Show. Anacani was the first great love of my life I think!

Cranking the car to get it started. I actually owned one of these, a 1950 something Austin Cambridge Station Wagon, and had to crank it a number of times, when the starter motor was playing up.
Wow. My friend needed us to push his '70s something Datsun to get it going: it was like kickstarting a go-kart.
