"I have never seen this before & maybe never again!"
« on: April 22, 2022, 08:00:14 pm »
This is my 20th year here and I have never ever (here or back home) seen in my half-century-plus existence... A MAN HOLDING A BIG PEDAL BIKE OVER HIS HEAD WHILE RIDING ON THE BACK OF A SCOOTER AS THE PASSENGER, THEY WEAVING THROUGH TRAFFIC.

This happened today. Just an hour ago. I have seen such chaotic, wild stuff on TV in countries like India. But i have never seen this exactly, and didn't expect it here.

I would have taken a photo if I wasn't exactly then driving, passing in the opposite direction.

What about you?

WHAT HAVE YOU SEEN HERE (OR ANYWHERE) AND MAY NEVER SEE AGAIN?

1) A huge, yellow full moon creeping out of the ocean on a crystal clear summer's night. This was over 30 years ago. Have never seen it again in such entirety or clarity.

2) Two orcas cutting through the water, just as the sun was rising, less than 10 metres from the boat I was on. Never saw it again. Doubt I will.

Edit: I'd better delete 3 and 4. They may be off-putting and slightly offensive to some  :-[

I was boogie boarding with my daughter at Jeffrey's Bay, South Africa when a school of dolphins joined us in the wave we were catching and my daughter reached out and touched them. Awesome experience and sight, doubt I will ever see or have that again.

I watched a beluga whale swim for 4 hours (maybe 5 but that sounds psycho) at an aquarium in Vancouver (we humans imprison them).

I also saw the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) when a reporter in Northern Alberta, Canada.

I see 5 people on a scooter so often it doesn't raise an eyebrow. 4 is totally normal. But 6, which I have seen, is a little rare!

I used to see the Northern Lights during the winter from my balcony when I lived in Calgary quite regularly.

This reminds me. I watched Halley's comet in the early 1986 sky. I'll be dead by the time it zooms around again. Even though it wasn't that clear, it was still a once in a lifetime thing. Probably most of you here also saw it.

I remember seeing it too. I also remember seeing Comet Hale-Bopp when I lived in Halifax. At one point it stretched the entire sky from horizon to horizon. I bought a telescope to see it better. Then when it dipped below the horizon I went on vacation to Thailand and there it was again!

I remember it, of course, but considering that was 35 years ago, I'm thinking quite a few here will not have ...

Hale-Bopp in the 90s is probably going to be the most spectacular comet of our lifetimes.

Brain snap! Of course, Hale-Bopp. I truly forgot about it.

Oops! I think I should have said 'brain fade'  :-[

Calgary? I've been there often as I did my undergrad in Alberta. Heck, I never saw the Northern Lights in Edmonton (though I was in streetlit areas most of the time. Huh. I had to go 4 hours north of Edmonton (Fahler, the Peace River area) before I noticed the great spectacle. It is incredible. I can just imagine the oral stories the First Nations peoples had for it.

Was wondering about that too. I was born, and raised, in Calgary and never seen the lights from there.

I saw them every winter when it was especially cold. Our balcony faced west and we could see the Rocky Mountains. It wasn't uncommon to see the Northern Lights. I used to see them when I was working up in Northern Quebec and Labrador too. Impressive.

I remember one winter's night getting up to go to the toilet and they were visible, I went to wake my Toronto born and raised wife to show her and she was in awe.

Calgary was probably my favourite city to have lived in in Canada. This would have been early 90's.
